Info from here. |
|
Henry Breault (October 14, 1900 December 5, 1941) was a United States Navy sailor who received the Medal of Honor for his actions while serving aboard the USS O-5 (SS-66) (US Submarine O-5). Henry Breault was born in Putnam, Connecticut, on October 14, 1900. He enlisted in the British Royal Navy at sixteen years of age and, after serving under the White Ensign for four years, joined the U.S. Navy. On October 28, 1923 Torpedoman Second Class Breault was a member of the crew of USS O-5 (SS-66) when that submarine was sunk in a collision in the Panama Canal. Though he could have escaped, Breault chose to assist a shipmate, and remained inside the sunken submarine until both were rescued more than a day later. For his "heroism and devotion to duty" on this occasion, Henry Breault was awarded the Medal of Honor. He received his Medal of Honor from President Calvin Coolidge, in ceremonies at the White House, Washington, D.C., on March 8, 1924. Following twenty years of U.S. Navy service, Henry Breault became ill with a heart condition. He died at the Naval Hospital at Newport, Rhode Island, on December 4, 1941. He was buried in Saint Mary Cemetery in Putnam, Connecticut. |
Rank and organization: Torpedoman Second Class, U.S. Navy. Born: October 14, 1900, Putnam, Conn. Accredited to: Vermont. G.O. No.: 125, February 20, 1924. Citation:
For heroism and devotion to duty while serving on board the U.S. submarine O-5 at the time of the sinking of that vessel. On the morning of 28 October 1923, the O-5 collided with the steamship Abangarez and sank in less than a minute. When the collision occurred, Breault was in the torpedo room. Upon reaching the hatch, he saw that the boat was rapidly sinking. Instead of jumping overboard to save his own life, he returned to the torpedo room to the rescue of a shipmate whom he knew was trapped in the boat, closing the torpedo room hatch on himself. Breault and Brown remained trapped in this compartment until rescued by the salvage party 31 hours later. (Medal presented by President Coolidge at the White House on 8 March 1924.)

Another nice warm day today. Lots of snow melted. I can use my driveway now. Life is good. You would not catch me in a submarine though. We have heroes for jobs like that.

Good evening, JJ...((HUGS))...did you make it to Vandenberg?
To: mountainlion
Good evening, mountainlion...hurrah for you and your driveway!! Stay warm and safe.
I feel the same about me and submarines....no way!!
Takes special folks to be sealed in one and no way out til a hatch is reopened. Not me!!

March 9Watched by God
The Lord watches over you.
Psalm 121:5Our little grandson waved goodbye, then turned back with a question. Grandma, why do you stand on the porch and watch until we leave? I smiled at him, finding his question cute because hes so young. Seeing his concern, however, I tried to give a good answer. Well, its a courtesy, I told him. If youre my guest, watching until you leave shows I care. He weighed my answer, but still looked perplexed. So, I told him the simple truth. I watch, I said, because I love you. When I see your car drive away, I know youre safely heading home. He smiled, giving me a tender hug. Finally, he understood.
His childlike understanding reminded me what all of us should rememberthat our heavenly Father is constantly watching over each of us, His precious children. As Psalm 121 says, The Lord watches over youthe Lord is your shade at your right hand (v. 5).
What assurance for Israels pilgrims as they climbed dangerous roads to Jerusalem to worship. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The Lord keeps you from all harmhe will watch over your life (vv. 67). Likewise, as we each climb our lifes road, sometimes facing spiritual threat or harm, The Lord will watch over [our] coming and going. Why? His love. When? Now and forevermore (v. 8).

Reflect & Pray
What mountain are you climbing today? What assurance do you find in knowing God is watching over you?
Our loving Father, as we travel the road of life, thank You for watching over us, keeping us safe.
