Chris Matthews didn’t get fired for being a sex monster. He got fired for doing his job.
And what was that job? To represent the non-crazy, “No Kool-Aid for me, thanks” Left on television, while being entertaining and pointed and wacky. Read the GQ piece published Friday that apparently got Matthews fired and you’ll note that the writer, Laura Bassett, had two completely unrelated categories of complaint that she artfully weaved together to create an indictment of Matthews as a sexist.
One complaint was that Matthews would compliment women’s looks. He said of Sarah Palin that there was “something electric” and “very attractive” about her. He told Erin Burnett, “You’re a knockout.” All true. He made a couple of mild compliments to Bassett: “Why haven’t I fallen in love with you yet?” True, men shouldn’t talk this way around the office, and few guys under 50 have failed to get the message that this kind of thing makes (some) women uncomfortable. But Matthews is 70. Old guys flirt with young women as a way of telling themselves they’re still in the game. Young women used to be more forgiving, to recognize the pathos underlying the impulse and shrug it off. Now they exaggerate their emotional reaction, pretend that they’re “shaken” or “couldn’t breathe.” Bassett writes that a couple of flirty comments from Matthews “undermined my ability to do my job well.” That’s hard to believe.

Just came up on the elevator with a couple of women in their 50s...ish. Each attractive, one longer blonde hair and the other, short, recently styled brunette hair. They were continuing a conversation started earlier and the brunette was reaching toward the back of her head mentioning that she thinks she needs to go back to the stylist. She then looked at me and laughed and said, I’m sure you don’t need to hear two women talking about this stuff first thing in the morning...
I told her that was okay and her hair looked very nice. She smiled with a natural wink (kinda like smiling with her eyes... I love people who smile with their eyes) and she thanked me as we reached their floor, the door opened and they stepped out. As the blonde continued their conversation, the brunette turned back and wished me a wonderful day.
Good, positive vibe to start the day. Always acceptable.
I was in Vegas a couple months ago. All these young, pretty girls were hitting on me. Couldn’t understand why until I got back to my room. I had inadvertently taped a $100, bill to my forehead.

Everybody’s got their crosses.
The reality is this, some older guys can pull off compliments/mild flirting and it’s nice. Very easy to smile back and enjoy the brief interaction. Other guys make your skin crawl when they do the same thing.
It’s not money or looks that makes the difference. I can’t quite put my finger on it.
I’m a waitress so it happens enough that I’ve wondered about why some older guys come across as sweet and others as creepy.
Unfortunately, there are many younger women who have been brought up to hate men in general if they're leftists, and I've found that while I have always followed your suggestion (that's how I was taught by my mother when I was a child,) some of those "womyn" get angry when you are polite to them.
In general, you can tell within just a few seconds if you're dealing with one of those harpies, and it's best to just ignore them, never speaking to them without reason (and with witnesses,) and just keeping the heck away from them.
I've had to deal with too many of them in the workplace far too often.

My first job in IT support was much the same. I worked at a startup, and the employees were quite close, and the conversations could get quite loud and raunchy.
One day as we were leaving for lunch, a travel agent from the business next door was also leaving, looked at us, and said, "Don't you people ever go to Church?!?!"
There were 2 women working there (there were 8 of us at the time,) and the receptionist had a sign posted on her desk, "Sexual Harassment will not be reported to management. It will however, be graded."
I do miss the days when you didn't have to evaluate everything you say multiple times before saying it.

It’s better to be looked over than overlooked.
In my opinion, it comes down to intent. The guys who mean to convince the woman to be a conquest come across as creepy. Those who are just being nice because it makes you and them feel better do not give off that creepy vibe.
As a middle aged man, it helps me to stay on the nice side when I keep my 30+ year marriage in mind! LOL

I don’t see this as a problem. MSNBC really doesn’t want Beanie to be the candidate anymore than the DNC does.
There was moment there at the beginning. We all thought, that “man, he’s sounding too good to be true.” Then there was the discussion here among many that he was a DEMOCRAT plant, in the Clinton camp.
I think after a couple rallies, he sold me, and I was a true believer for the duration.
I’m in my mid-20’s. Older men flirt with me far more often than younger “men,” who are usually still boys in their 20’s, and very insecure.
I don’t understand why any woman would be offended (much less incapacitated) by flirty comments.
Older men break the ice this way. Some of them are actually flirting, others are just being friendly.
By the way, older men are better dates. They’re usually not stupid or crazy, and if they are they don’t try to hide it. :) Seriously, at 50 they usually still look good and they’ve got most of the bugs worked out of them. They’re not scared or intimidated by a woman’s looks or brains.
Maybe they’re short on time, so they don’t waste it being phony. Or, some woman has already taught them they can’t fool anybody. So they go with authenticity.

Chris Matthews did the cheap flirt thing, to get his mental rocks off.
You on the other hand, gave a genuine opinion.
If I were Matthews, instead of flirting like those a holes all do, I’d say.
“I know I need to be careful what I say here so you won’t get the wrong opinion of me, so, let me say I’m not hitting on you, I love my wife, (or I have a gf etc), but I must tell you that you are ravishing, and I mean you are stunning, and it’s easy to see why this network hired you. Good luck to you, I wish you well.”
It’s because you’re sincere and genuine, and not a jerk like Matthews, O’ Reilly, and all the other guys that think they’re hot stuff...when they’re stupid.
If you flirt, like Matthews did, you flirt with the intention of going all the way, otherwise, knock it off.
What you and I do, is give an honest opinion.
I always notice when my girls here have a new do, or make up or something. And I’ll bring it up at the morning meeting, like
“Ok, Melissa what’s with the cute new hair do.”
Doesn’t matter if they’re married or not.
But I never cross the line with them at work....ever.
Nah, not any more....
