The city of Charlottesville, Virginia, will not honor the birthday of Thomas Jefferson this spring for the first time since World War II. The Washington Post reports that the city will instead celebrate the demise of slavery this coming Tuesday.
The holiday is known as Liberation and Freedom Day. It will commemorate when Union troops arrived in the city in March 1865 and freed enslaved people.
The change is the latest example of this southern city reckoning with its history. It began when the city tried to remove its Confederate monuments. That inspired white supremacists to stage the deadly 2017 Unite the Right rally.
The Confederate monuments that drew the neo-Nazis remain standing. A judge ruled last year that the statues should stay.
Bricktown. It’s in Ocean County. I,m originally from northern NJ. Born and raised in Kearny. Named for it’s most famous local son, Union General Phil Kearny.
Have relatives in NJ going back to the 1700s. Maternal grandparents are buried in Burlington County.
I know Ocean County was the most GOP Presidential county in the state in 2016, surpassing Sussex. A whopping 65-31% for Trump. I wouldn’t be surprised if he cracked 70% this year. It’d be nice if the state voted like it did in 1988, the last sane Presidential race there (when Bush, Sr. got 56%).
This pondscum city is sure gonna enjoy the convention.
A lot of Freepers seem to think we Jerseyans are all Democrats. We’re not.
Well, or squishy left-wing RINOs like GuavaCheesyPoof. :-P
NBC reporting. Well earned name of “Nothing But Communism” network.
Not all those who tried to protect Jefferson Davis monument were neo-Nazis or even far-rightists. From what I’ve read, some were just pissed off that the Left was trying to do a
Hitler/Stain” rewrite of history by making things disappear
And nothing about the 3,000 liberals and leftists/Marxists of all stripes who attacked about 300 pro-statute demonstrators.
NBC - “Never Believe Their Crap”.
[They never tire of flogging that dead lie.]
That is correct. It’s straight out of the liberal playbook.
George or Weezy?
A tad off topic, but I just returned from giving a series of speeches at Liberty University. Wow. I was there in 2006 and it was a few buildings and a new hockey arena in the middle of empty fields. Now its covered by a massive $2b building project courtesy of Jerry Falwell, Jr. All the buildings are in the Jeffersonian-style architecture. Beautiful.
“You keep advocating for slavery as if it were a Conservative position.”
That is an interesting comment.
May we see your data?
“Think about this: In New Jersey where I live during the 2016 campaign you couldn’t find a Hillary sign for love or money.”
It is a little more complicated than yard signs.
Clinton carried New Jersey in 2016. By a lot.
We’re not all liberals here in NJ.
Lionel.
My data ? Your posts. Defeating slavery was apparently the worst thing to happen in the history of the Republic by your reckoning. The “disaster at Appomattox.” You got your ideologies backwards, Hoss.
Did you not read jmacusa is from Ocean County, where the Butchess of Benghazi barely got 30% of the vote. Their county would obviously have hardly had any Hillary signs.
So what do they have against Lionel? He was cool in two sitcoms.
They hate trains.
“The disaster at Appomattox.”
That is a reference to the loss of the principle consent of the governed.
I didn’t realize you have been arguing that Lincoln “fought to free the slaves.” Is that your argument: Lincoln “fought to free the slaves?”
