Coronavirus panic sends Park Slope Food Coop into organic food-buying frenzy

Coronavirus panic has sent the famously crunchy Park Slope Food Coop into “chaos” as people stockpile organic goods to brace for a local outbreak — with a skirmish breaking out over a can of tuna fish, according to members.

The famed Brooklyn produce collective saw its fair-trade food flying off the shelves Monday morning, just hours after New York City’s first case of coronavirus was confirmed.

“There is nothing on the shelves. It’s chaos,” said Henderson Paternell, a nine-year member of the socialist-tinged Union Street supermarket.

Some of the members reported that perishable items such as soups, peanut butter, rice and oats were out of stock.

Last night, the wife and I went shopping at a Target in a third ring suburb of the Twin Cities.

of course, they were completely out of Clorox, Purel and even the grocery area looked a bit more picked over than usual.

But the store as a whole didn’t seem hectic. As we checked out, I gazed at a few other peoples shopping carts. There were the obvious ones that had Clorox wipes, etc but it didn’t seem like anyone was stockpiling.

As for us, we purchased a few extra things like Clorox spray, some shelf stable items like crackers, soup, etc. as well as a few extra jugs of spring water. I may go back in the next day and pick up some more essentials such as flour, yeast, Rebel Yell whiskey, macaroni and cheese.

I figure its better to be safe than sorry - especially if a panic hits and everyone starts rushing to the stores.

“people stockpile organic goods...”

Yeah, I don’t think the organic stuff is going to hold up that well to stockpiling. Give me the sodium-laden processed crap if I’m looking for shelf life.

As if organic isn’t pricey enough already. Let’s make a run on it.

I always look for preservatives in the foods. At my age I need all I can get.

I do have some organic corn cobs if anyone is interested. Might be a run on TP

A lot of so called organic food is starting to rot by the time you buy it.

Stocking up on this high priced stuff is another sure sign of idiots in action.

By the way, the information you read here was gleaned and compiled from medical sources. In other words it was not home grown as an earlier responder suggested.

Fighting the flu virus!

Just ran across the following article by Dr. Andrew W. Saul what seems to confirm the effectiveness of vitamin C. Along here NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) deserves also to be mentioned a precursor to a very potent anti-oxidant glutathione, which is also used as an antidote against acetaminophen, as well as many other poisonous substances.

Comment: Dr. Andrew W. Saul, an international expert on vitamin therapy, says: “The coronavirus can be dramatically slowed or stopped completely with the immediate widespread use of high doses of vitamin C. Bowel tolerance levels of C taken in divided doses throughout the day, is a clinically proven antiviral, without equal.” And by the way Dr. Andrew Saul is not the only one touting the effectiveness of C as an effective virus fighter.

Fighting the flu virus, this may include the new corona virus as well. A while back when the H-1 N-1 virus was active (2009) some one from the medical profession suggested the use of a good dose of NAC or N-Acetyl Cysteine along with a healthy dose of buffered ascorbic acid (Vitamin C-about twice as much C as NAC) and it appeared to work like a charm. An effective dose of C maybe in the range of 3 to 4 grams three times a day mixed in with one time 3 grams of NAC.

What I found to work very well is by taking a small glass jar and dissolve about 12 grams of calcium ascorbate as well as 3 grams of NAC in about 8 to 9 oz of water and over a period of 24 hours take a swig every so often until this mixture is gone. Calcium ascorbate as well as NAC should dissolve very quickly. Calcium ascorbate can be bought in bulk very reasonably. Small amounts of C in the 500 mg range maybe great as supplements, but in order to be as effective as possible in an attempt to subdue some of these nasty viruses larger amounts as suggested are required.

How vitamin C kills viruses?

Vitamin C uses many ways to help the body overcome viruses. At a high enough concentration in the blood, vitamin C will directly inactivate viruses. During a viral infection, the body’s supplies of vitamin C are rapidly depleted as the immune system’s white blood cells absorb and quickly use up all the vitamin C available. The immune system actually uses vitamin C to make an important antioxidant inside the cells called glutathione. It also increases the body’s production of its own antiviral medicine called interferon.

Vitamin C also has its own anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and antihistamine-like effects. It therefore powerfully improves symptoms like pain, swelling, weakness, rash and fever.

Viruses cause haemorrhage

Many viruses cause bleeding, a problem referred to as haemorrhagic fever. Holistic doctors have pointed out that scurvy (vitamin C deficiency) also cause bleeding. What do the two conditions have in common? Well, a virus infection can create an acute vitamin C deficiency. This will cause the walls of the small blood vessels and capillaries to become fragile, break, and bleeding results. Some viruses also destroy, special elements in the blood, necessary to prevent bleeding, called platelets. This results in a bleeding tendency.

Using vitamin C

In high enough concentrations, vitamin C has been shown to destroy or inactivate every virus tested. The trick is to get enough vitamin C into the body. Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables is very important as it contains many cofactors that help vitamin C work better. But that will not provide enough of the vitamin.

Sufferers from viral infections like chikungunya should take large oral doses of vitamin C. The most effective way is using vitamin C is as powder or crystals as each teaspoonful contains four or five grams. Start with half of a teaspoonful every four hours at the first sign of an infection or even before if you feel at risk. You can slowly increase the amount and frequency of the amount of vitamin C or until you start having loose bowels. If that happens, cut back to a lower dose. Doctors call this technique ‘titrating to bowel tolerance’.

Intravenous (IV) vitamin C: More severe or complicated cases will benefit from vitamin C given by drip directly into the vein. This is an extremely useful and powerful treatment, which is administered by a doctor in the office or hospital.
Here is what Professor Michael J Gonzalez of the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences campus, had to say about this approach: “In our experience, IV vitamin C benefits all viral-suffering patients. We have used, it successfully against dengue, chikungunya and influenza.

Ironically enough - take a guess where all the Vitamin C is manufactured and imported from?
