One overarching truth emerged from the cacophonous Democratic debate this week: The Democrats haven't got game. They're floundering. They're lost. And they're coming up short.
Everyone on that stage except maybe the clueless Michael Bloomberg recognized that Sen. Bernie Sanders is the dominant front-runner, so they trained their sights on him, which is hardly a smart strategy for ingratiating yourself to the Democratic base responsible for his popularity. It's like trying to win someone's love by trashing his family. So right out of the gates, these contenders shot themselves in the foot. Not a good look.
Moderator Norah O'Donnell, herself a progressive and strongly rooting for the eventual Democratic nominee, fired the opening question to Sanders: How would he turn voters away from Trump when his economy is doing so well? "We haven't had an unemployment rate this low for this long in 50 years," said O'Donnell, probably with a little throw-up in her mouth. I'm sure Sanders and the rest of the hapless lot were thinking, "Thanks a lot, Nora. Thanks for undermining our entire reason for political existence. Whose side are you on, girlfriend?"
O'Donnell apparently got the memo that Sanders has to be taken out because, as a self-professed socialist, he will have a disadvantage in the general election. Maybe MSNBC's panicky Chris Matthews gave her a call.
The incongruous Tom Steyer sought to thread the needle with Bernie's Brigade by praising their idol for correctly identifying the problems facing the country but disputing his solutions. He violated several cliches here. He was too cute by half, and you can't give with one hand and take with the other -- not with socialists, anyway, who are all about freebies. Try taking anything away from them and you'll pull back a bloody stub.
That would be a major problem for Steyer if he were remotely relevant in this campaign, but relevance is not his strong suit. With his failed criticism of Sanders, however, he raised the curtain on a major problem facing the Democrats. You can't -- to invoke another cliche -- cut the baby in half. You can't divorce problems that socialist Sanders identifies from solutions that socialist Sanders offers, for they are ideologically interconnected.
Sanders believes the problem facing the country is too much capitalism, which necessarily makes the solution socialism. Does Steyer not realize that? Must he be dispatched to the progressive woodshed? Leftists need to remind this billionaire that "he didn't build that." Please don't accuse me of overgeneralizing about Sanders' problems and solutions because I've read plenty of progressive critics who are crestfallen over Sanders' lack of specificity in the debate.
In fairness, the non-Bernie candidates shouldn't be sore at O'Donnell, because they undermined their own reason for political existence by failing to present an alternative to President Donald Trump. They offered no constructive solutions for the country. They just trashed one another. In this way they are a mirror image of their Democratic counterparts in Congress, who have offered nothing constructive for the country throughout Trump's term. They've only trashed, investigated and tried to impeach him. But in their defense, they have nothing, so what are they supposed to do? They have no answer for Trump because answers don't exist for nonexistent problems.
If you're a Democrat, you can't be pleased with much about this debate. Sen. Elizabeth Warren basically endorsed Bernie's socialism but implied he isn't disciplined and detailed enough, as she is, to implement his wonderful ideas. Well, if you'll recall, it's Warren who's been unable to explain the math behind her proposals, and it's Warren who hasn't been forthright about her own socialism, though she came pretty close when identifying with Bernie.
The three Bs all went down barely swinging. Former Vice President Joe Biden loses more in stature with each appearance. He pandered to African Americans with his usual suck-up to former President Barack Obama and whined all night about being treated unfairly. Hardly presidential -- or even vice presidential. Bloomberg was pathetic. He didn't lay a glove on Sanders or anyone else except himself. Former Mayor Pete Buttigieg was a walking paradox: He defended himself against lacking passion with his enthusiasm for being boring. He passionately doubled down on being comatose and, in his wonderfully mild-mannered state, rudely walked all over a stammering Bernie.
Speaking of Bernie, he was most animated in praising Fidel Castro's communist Cuba while pretending not to -- another not-so-good look.
All in all, it was a pretty good night for us bitter clingers.
The democrats are doing to themselves what the republicans did to themselves eight years ago, they’re debating themselves into irrelevance. They’re just showcasing their idiocracy, if they had any sense they’d stop all these debates and concentrate on campaigning. That’s a big if though.
South Carolina Republicans, “ALL”, Take serious note: South Carolina is an open primary election state. That means both parties are eligible to vote in either primary. The Republicans have no primary election this year...they chose to give all of their delegates to POTUS, Donald J. Trump
Therefore, all registered GOP voters are free to cast votes in tomorrow’s Democrat Primary election. I urge all Republicans to turn out and vote for Democrat/Independent, Bernie Sanders, so that he can defeat Democrat, Joe Biden and thus help to totally destroy the entire Democrat Party politically, nationwide.....”DO IT”!!!
I have predicted for awhile now that the goal is a brokered convention where some “wild card” candidate is brought forward as a compromise.
I don’t have a clue at this time who that candidate might be but a wild ass guess is Oprah could be it.
If she begins showing up on soft news shows and is asked “hard” questions about her past, that would be sign they are trying to expose her skeletons before the GOP does.
America knows the public Oprah, few know the real Oprah.
Woman of color
I think Republicans should vote for Biden. A victory for Biden in SC increases the odds of a brokered convention for the Dems this summer. That would be the best thing of all for Trump and the GOP.
So Donald won another “debate.”
I was against this because l don’t like to tempt fate but the Rats and their K Street Alles are using virus to wreck the economy. Bernie seems like the most un-electable so now l am for screwing with the rats primary. The rats did this to us in 08 and gave us McTraitor.
Indeed. A “brokered” convention that dismisses Bernie will freeze a whole bunch of Bernites in their homes and others of them will vote for Donald Trump in spite.
They want to give free healthcare to everyone just as a disease emerges that will have every retard with the sniffles in the ER convinced theyre gonna die.
I’m loving this, because I think it cuts both ways.
1) If the Democrats continue to go hard Left and choose an actual Socialist as their nominee, they will see an increase in the “Walk Away” contingent of fairly normal Democrat voters and Independents. Those people will either stay home in November or vote for Trump because he’s not crazy.
2) If the Democrats stop crazy Bernie, stab him in the back (again) and go with either Joe Biden (Ha!) or a dark horse at the convention, they will see an increase in the “Walk Away” contingent as young, committed Bernie Bots reject the party that has rejected them. Those people will either stay home in November or go Third Party.
Well, if we're gonna be SWAGing it here, I put the Mooch forward.
The Nasty Sasquatch is lurking in the wings, just waiting for them to go to a contentious convention, she then steps forward and "sacrifices" herself.
That would allow the Kenyan traitor to get his third term, so to speak.
But Harpo the Purple Whale doesn't want it...might cut into her social life.
She just wants everyone to think and postulate that she might and so therefore she remains in the spotlight, blocking the light for all the other candidates.
Let's face it...this bunch of idiots have totally screwed the pooch.
All they can do now is stick twigs in the gears.
I really don't think there are enough stupid people in these here United States to elect any of the mind-numbingly worthless so-called "candidates" that have come forth in the Dim party.
(Unless, of course, they empty the graveyards and register half the population of the Mexican Border towns.)
What a circus!
I could not stand that woman way back when she had her first TV show. Now that is it obvious she is a full bore leftard, I dislike her even more.
The thoughts of having that POS as POTUS makes me want to puke.
Seriously, she makes Hillary look good.
(It’s like saying dog crap is easier on the eyes than cow crap.)
Don’t drive The Clown Car into a ditch, Bernie. Get a government approved child seat for little mikey totalitarian if he gets behind the wheel.
Michelle Obama meets some of the criteria I have set for a wild card but she is carrying a lot of baggage.
I don’t think I have ever heard her giving a speech so I don’t know how good she might be but even if she could give a good speech she does not have any charisma. Her only claim to fame is being married to Obama. Even Hillary knew she had to check a few boxes (Senator, Sec of State) before running for President.
So no, not going to be Michelle.
RE: Post 5 - No Dan, while a brokered convention might be a fun food fight to watch, it would be far better for Trump and conservatives if Bernie were to win the nomination. The democrat party would be destroyed and Trump would win between 40 and 48 states
That's the exact reason Michelle Obama isn't going to get into it. Oprah Winfrey at least has a history of working to get where she's at, Michelle Obama has never done an ounce of work in her lifetime. Running for president would interfere with her sitting on the couch eating bon bons while looking out at the water from her Martha's Vineyard living room.
It's not going to be Oprah either, but those that think Michelle Obama is going to run have lost their minds, the woman's far too lazy to do anything that would require getting out of bed before noon.
More people should be like that.
Would you rather she didn't know her limitations and got in everybody's face?
I WANT Trump v Sanders. This is a fight we need to have as a nation. Maybe, just maybe, the RINOS will get behind Trump to stop a non uniparty Sanders.
