Target raised wages. Then it cut workers' hours and doubled their workload

Workers say Target is making drastic cuts to their schedules and doubling their workload as it increases minimum wage under its ‘modernization plan’ to increase efficiency

Adam Ryan, 31, has worked at Target in Christiansburg, Virginia, for three years. He works additional jobs whenever he’s able to, but is regularly scheduled only 20 hours per week at Target, despite having open availability.

...

In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Bonnie Furlong has worked as a cashier at Target for about seven years, but still makes what starting workers make, $13 an hour.

“The last time they raised it, they cut our hours, so I’m basically making less than I was before they raised it to $13 an hour,” said Furlong. Her hours were reduced from 32 to 38 hours per week to around 20 hours per week. “If I wasn’t getting social security, which isn’t very much either, I wouldn’t be able to work there because I couldn’t afford it.”

Matt Funnell, a Target employee in Massachusetts since August 2018, saw his weekly schedule change from full-time, over 30 hours a week, to less than 10 hours in January 2020.

“My biweekly paycheck doesn’t even pay rent. Co-workers of mine are losing health insurance and other benefits,” he said. “My higher-ups still expect us to get the same amount of work done in a fraction of the time.”

...

But Ryan and several other Target workers have noted a drastic reduction in scheduled hours and significant increases in workloads as Target has increased their minimum wage and rolled out a “modernization plan” in 2019 to increase efficiency. They think that broader influences in the retail sector are responsible for their plight – notably, the actions of their hard-charging rival Amazon.

You want $15/hr, you need to perform $15/hr worth of work. You better figure out how to make it work or find a way to move up the chain at Target to a guaranteed FT job.

This ALWAYS happens and these people are SO STUPID!! So yes they get $15.00 an hour but their hours are cut they no longer get the benefits of a full time worker, everything they now buy costs more because of the wage increase, more payroll taxes come out of their check AND the only people benefiting from the wage increase is the damn government getting more money in payroll taxes!! I just can’t believe how stupid American workers are!!!

They essentially got a $2.00 an hour raise and lost their benefits and their hours, for a net pay loss, plus they got their workload increased. I’d say the $15 for All crowd did Target corporate a big favor.

You get what you pay for, you earn what you are worth. Don’t like it, get a better job.

But now Dems can put them on the dole and tell them they’ll even lose that if they vote Republican.

Most companies want more work for more pay. Sign me up for one that doesn’t. Hint - there are none.

I think it costs more like $25 an hour to pay someone $15 an hour.

Target isn't union. They probably raised the minimum wage to attract workers in a difficult economy for retail. The workers probably didn't take a vote on whether to accept the raises.

That said, union shops did vote and saw the same thing. Starting wages went up, hours needed for benefits went up so fewer qualified, and hours went down with a big push to self-checkout and customer scan-go technologies. It's frustrating because you may not have the labor to replace a call out. You need a certain number of hours to keep people coming to work but it's also hard to hire because the hours aren't there even if the base pay might get people to interview. Job mobility is too easy in this economy for retail caught in this trap.

I don’t see why people think 15 dollars is a ton of money. I think it’s pathetic. I could never survive on that raising four kids even with a wife working. That’s 31,000 and if wife works 31,000 to make it 62,000. Take home is around 47,000 after taxes and other items taken out of the check. 42,000 would be terrible for a family of six! Thank goodness my wife and I do better then that. Heck, roof needs replaced soon - 17,000. Heating and AC will be 6,000. House painting in August 3,5000. How can people live on 15 dollars an hour?????

I worked there in the 90s.

Pay wasnt incredible, and work for me was hard, but the managers were the best folks I could work for and they gave me free meals from the store restaurant whenever I had to do something especially tedious and “messy”. For a college freshmen that was a sweet deal when I took my break to do homework and haven’t had a full meal since the previous day.

Still have some back pains from then, but still a great experience. Miss those people, still wont wear red and khaki ever again.

Mr. Market always has his way. He’s a plodding, principled fellow, Mr. Market. It’s almost as if he and his friend Mr. Thermodynamics came from the same Mom, maybe even the same father and litter.

Target Gotta pay More in recent years to hire security officers to monitor the women’s dress rooms and restrooms.

The workers should’ve Realized then it wasn’t the place to be $15 or not

In the real world, a $15 an Hour Employee Wage costs the Employer about $18 an Hour thanks to legally required State and Federal Employment Taxes.
