Student leaders, university officials and a history professor responded to another racial slur being used in an OU classroom Tuesday.
Two weeks ago, a journalism professor compared using the phrase "OK Boomer" to the N-Word.

This week the university said a history professor gave a warning before using the word multiple times.
We are tired of the press conferences, Black Emergency Response Team (BERT) student leader Miles Francisco said. We are tired of the meetings and we are tired of the town halls we are tired of promises with no action.
Im tired, OU Freshman Dindia Brown said. It kind of seems like when will it stop? Will it ever stop?
History professor Kathleen Brosnan said in an email to students, she used the word while reading from a 1920's U.S. Senate document.
Education purposes or not, if you're white, just don't say it, Francisco said. It should be that simple. I shouldn't have to be up here telling yall that.
According to a letter from Interim OU President Joseph Harroz, she warned students of the offensive word before she used it.
Her issuance of a trigger warning before her recitation does not lessen the pain caused by the use of the word, Harroz said.
In her email to students, Brosnan said "I am concerned that the words I quoted in class yesterday were hurtful. I want to apologize to all of you personally, please know that this was never my intention."
Ive had an opportunity to speak to the professor directly and what I will say is I don't think that the professor is a bad person, Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Dr. Belinda Hyppolite said. I do think bad judgement was used in this particular instance.
"It is common sense to avoid uttering the most offensive word in the English language," Harroz said.
The university said it its working on protocols to address instances like this.
Students pay a fee to come to this institution and they need to have an experience that is respected and that they are treated with dignity no matter where they go, Hyppolite said.
Brown, in her first year at the university, said she believes the administration is working to change things.
I directly have had personal conversations with (Harroz) concerning this matter and I can tell the want to is genuine and now we need more actions, she said.
Theres now a sit in hunger strike underway.
.@BERT_OU has given their demands and theyre asking for the resignation of OU Provost Kyle Harper. Theyre doing a silent hunger strike. Meaning, theyre not leaving until their demands are met
BERT’s demands:
BERT TWITTER
quote:
1. Provost Kyle Harper resigns from his position as provost effective immediately
quote:
2. Mandatory equity training for all faculty
quote:
3. Shifting the one time diversity experience training to a semester long class taken by all incoming and transfer students
quote:
4. Creating a Mulitcultural Center for all marginalized groups on campus
b. We call for a multicultural center that will include large office space and meeting spaces for marginalized groups. A common lounge area, study rooms, and a Popeyes. Outdoor/indoor auditorium. In order to accommodate the man affinity space needs of marginalized groups on this campus this Center should be at least three floors with 24/7 student access and a computer lab, media/multimedia lab, dance studio, and free printing.
In other words, if Francisco is blasting the N word in a rap song while driving his car with a massive bass woofer around campus that is a okay.
The University is going the way of the horse and buggy.
Schools like this need to have a zero tolerance policy for the “N-word”. No one should be allowed to use it regardless of race, and all Rap and hip-hop music that uses the dreaded “N-word” should likewise be banned. Otherwise, the chirrun are gonna feel “unsafe”.
Sticks and Stones may break my Bones, but Words can never hurt me.
Great! Lock and chain the doors. Wait until they start eating each other... The "silent hunger strike" will last until they go Bert Tartar. Then, Bert will go all vocal.
I'm told long pig tastes like pork.
Are you serious Clark? That is really their demands? A Popeyes. Lol
MACDUFF: The tyrant has not battered at their peace?
ROSS: No, they were well at peace when I did leave ‘em.
MACDUFF: Be not a niggard of your speech. How goes t?
Shakespeare Macbeth. Act4 scene3
I don’t mind “OK, Boomer” — as long as they don’t mind “OK, Yuppie,” or “OK, Millennial.”
This use of the term “racist” had gotten out of hand. We need a national discussion on the definition of racism. Just what does it mean??
Its always about the chicken, when you get right down to it.
I am so sick of the politically-correct snowflakes.
The professor was reading, verbatim, from official government documents, in-context as a means of demonstrating the realities and public attitudes of that time period. Indeed - if there ever was an appropriate time to utter the word(s) - it would be in teaching on historical issues.
I feel very bad for black people, who have been indoctrinated by the democrats to be so powerless, that a simple word can crush their spirits, doom their lives to a lack of acheivement, drive them into fits of either rage or depression.
There are slurs for every race, color, creed, national origin, sex, personality, height weight — you name it, there is a slur.
But of all the slurs, of all the ways they are used, only ONE damages people so badly that we consider it a weapon that must be stopped at all costs — because we have turned a generation of african-americans into dependents who cannot overcome some other idiot’s expression of a simple word.
I would never give any other person this kind of power over me. I fear getting stabbed with a knife, or shot with a gun, or beat to a pulp. But I learned as a child not to give a darn what people SAID about me.
Good advice, sir.
“that they are treated with dignity no matter where they go”
Assuming an entire class of people are so weak that they cannot even HEAR a word uttered in a classroom session, read from an historic document, is the ultimate in “destruction of dignity”.
I would treat you with dignity by assuming you are able to hear things without falling apart. That you are not some 2-year-old who needs to be treated like some incompetent.
” and a Popeyes.”
That’s racist.
I personally find OMG to be the most offensive, yet I'm surrounded by people who nonchalantly blurt it out at every surprise.
And that's not racist AT ALL!!!
My mom was quite the hippie-chick in her youth, and she carried my sister and I to a few civil rights marches as toddlers, and she made damn sure that we knew, to our core, that treating people differently based on skin color was wrong, wrong, wrong. Sadly for the Left, this lesson has never left me, and I continue to apply it to everyone, "Education purposes or not," and irrespective of the skin tones involved.
