Increasing numbers of older Baby Boomers are using marijuana: study
Reuters via Yahoo ^ | February 24th, 2020 | By Linda Carroll

(Reuters) - In just four years, marijuana use grew by 75% among Americans aged 65 and older, according to a new study, and researchers expressed concern over a lack of information on the potential health implications.

The increase was most pronounced in women, those with higher incomes and more education, according to a report published on Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine.

The findings continue a trend seen over the last decade, said the study's lead author, Benjamin Han, an assistant professor of geriatric medicine and palliative care at the New York University School of Medicine.

"Consider that not even 10 years ago 0.4% of adults 65 and older said they had used marijuana in the past year, and now it's 10 times that at 4%," Han said.

The trend is concerning, Han said, because of the lack of research on the effects of cannabis on older people. Some prescription and even over-the-counter medicines, such as Benadryl, affect older people differently, he said.

It was not known whether the trend is tied to marijuana becoming legally available in a growing number of U.S. states, or if people had been using the drug for many years before turning 65.

Oregon. It’s been quasi-legal since the ‘70s. Like I said...it’s a plant. People grow it.

Excuse me!

I happen to be one of the “Boomers” that you so disparagingly call “Dirty Hippies”

People are exercising a choice that is their God given right and you have the audacity to look down on them?

Up higher in this thread another Freeper displayed his choice by drinking a couple of beers and being happy with that

As one who has been there done that if I choose to puff some weed then that is merely a choice, and I dare you to be in my face and say that because I made it you can put me down

Try it, and you will be met with a full force response of buzz off

I have seen here and know of many who go to a doctor who prescribes them pain pills or other “medicines”, and I draw no issue with it or from it. I know what is going on and they have made their choice to take that route. God put the plant here for a reason and growing research shows that it has few of the side effects of Pharma products.

You infer that a person at 65 who chooses to puff some weed is somehow to be denigrated when it may stimulate appetite or make them feel better. Maybe you should stick to getting your own self in order and stop nanny goating others who do not choose the same path or make decisions different from yours.

You sound like a potential Sanders voter who loves running other peoples lives

Again and in parting I say, Buzz off

It is my life and theirs, NOT yours!

Was it ever unavailable, anywhere?

Realistically, yes. If it’s not legal how would one procure it? I have no idea.

Realistically, no. If you lived in a non-legalizing state and actually wanted to procure it, you could figure it out as many have with a one-time investment of effort, and get it readily every time after the first time.

I see your point, but personally I'd go with Mini-Mike "No Big Gulps" Bloomberg.

“it’s a plant. People grow it.”

Really? Wow, I didn’t know that. Maybe if I look in my backyard, I’ll find some. I hear they call it weed.

If you didn’t get my point, you’re uncommonly obtuse. Hope you’re enjoying the fog.

Sure, I could find some if it were illegal. Wouldn’t be worth the hassle or risk though.

Right now, for me, talking about how to get it is just an academic exercise. I was a regular user for about 10 years starting in 1971. I liked it too much. Had a lot of fun, but it cost me, academically.

Now, I have some. It’s easy to get. It’s legal here now. Can’t say that I like it much. I got it for medical reasons, and it didn’t do what I had hoped.

Seems like every time I go to the supermarket I smell it on someone. The odor is unmistakable.

So it wasn't and isn't "unavailable".

Is it because they are not longer drug tested at work because they retired?

In past years, I’ve hiked and bow-hunted the hell out of the local woods. Finding weed isn’t much of a challenge.

Your hypothetical question makes no sense in the context of where I live. I could go fishing at my favorite lake, and people will pull into the parking lot, and pretty soon, I’ll see smoke. Looks like college kids, people on their lunch hour, and I remember a woman in scrubs one evening. Weed is everywhere, and pretty much always has been. People just don’t hide it, now.

Yeah, I get that. It wasn’t like that here in beautiful mid-Michigan, but I really wasn’t motivated to get any anyway. I lost interest in pot a long time ago. But, because I have had health problems in recent years, I became interested in cannabis’ medical benefits.

Their brains are already fried, so why not accelerate the process. Expect to see an article on the dramatic and unexpected upswing in early dementia cases within the next 10 years.

My nephew began experimenting at 14, became a daily user around 17 and died of lung cancer at 38.

Cannabis is particularly damaging to the developing brain. It literally causes brain damage in younger users.

So, you look to score a $30 OZ of CBD, at the grocery store? :)

It doesn’t affect me the way it used to.. It’s not pleasant, so I don’t do it. But I see a lot of it being used. Homeless people sitting around with propane torches and dabbing rigs, people sitting in their cars with their grinders and bongs. I checked out some dispensaries when they first opened. The teenage me figured, or hoped, that weed would one day be legal and taxed. He didn’t foresee that seeds would cost $5 apiece, though.

Young people have been reporting since well before any state had legalized that they could get marijuana almost as easily as cigarettes or beer, although the latter two are much more widespread among adults. This evidence indicates that the best way of keeping a drug away from young people is to legalize it for adults - which gives its sellers an economic incentive to confine their sales to adults, namely the risk of losing their legal adult market.

First, I said “full of” and not all.
Second, puff your weed if you want, you’re increasing the chance of lung, esophagus, stomach, and other cancers. So toke it up if you’re dumb enough to do it.
3rd, I’m a disabled Army veteran of the “kill a commie for your mommy” age, it was the tail end of that good mentality, but it was there.
Inferring that I am a Sanders voters because you disagree with me is stunningly ignorant. Amazingly so.
So yeah, go off and enjoy your weed if you’re foolish enough to want to reap the whirlwind, hoss.

Gee thanks for your response...

I am 64 and what I do you may not agree with and I lose no sleep over your comments, condescending though they may be

Family came here in the 1600’s and it was for freedom of choice, and I live under that guise always

So no matter what each of us choose, your judgement is no more impact to me and my decisions than a fart in a hurricane

Choose for yourself
