(Reuters) - In just four years, marijuana use grew by 75% among Americans aged 65 and older, according to a new study, and researchers expressed concern over a lack of information on the potential health implications.
The increase was most pronounced in women, those with higher incomes and more education, according to a report published on Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine.
The findings continue a trend seen over the last decade, said the study's lead author, Benjamin Han, an assistant professor of geriatric medicine and palliative care at the New York University School of Medicine.
"Consider that not even 10 years ago 0.4% of adults 65 and older said they had used marijuana in the past year, and now it's 10 times that at 4%," Han said.
The trend is concerning, Han said, because of the lack of research on the effects of cannabis on older people. Some prescription and even over-the-counter medicines, such as Benadryl, affect older people differently, he said.
It was not known whether the trend is tied to marijuana becoming legally available in a growing number of U.S. states, or if people had been using the drug for many years before turning 65.

In the mid-70s I was able to get seedy Mexican weed for $8 an ounce. It worked well enough.
Now you can’t even get a gram for $8. But the sinsemilla is considerably more potent.
I thought about getting CBD. It’s certainly widely available. Even one of the few video stores still around here had a sign out front saying they have it. I have a friend who sells it for at least twice the price for what I get it for it elsewhere. Even Rush has a sponsor who sells CBD.
Instead, I think I’ll opt for a chiropractor or steroid shots for my chronic neck pain. I haven’t given up on trying to find cannabis with a relatively high % of CBD. I might try that before I go with the shots, just because I probably should avoid using any kind of steroid for a while.
Its purely visceral, like Trump haters, makes no sense whatsoever but they simply hate and despise Donald Trump and unfortunately I know one of them.
Lots of friends who dont like Trump and want him gone - yesterday but one woman who literally loses it when Donald Trumps name comes up, lots like people who despise science behind the ill effects of marijuana and anyone who brings the subject into the conversation.
You care enough to attack me and call me a communist lover, and then respond back afterwards. So kindly, go away.
FReep on.
Just as with tobacco - inform people of the consequences, then leave adults free to choose. It's the American way.
Exactly.
I learned about a recovering alcoholic in his 60’s the other day who uses. Instead of pounding down coffee and cigarettes, he chews edibles. Dunno what I think about that, but legalization is sure bringing on some changes.
If you get your morality from your state legislature, you got problems.
That wouldn't qualify as a recovery as AA defines it ... but you can't fatally overdose on edibles, unlike alcohol.
LOL! Amen to that.
I live in Washington and I can tell you that MJ can become habit forming very easy.
Question:
What do two christians say to each other at the pot store?
Oh, high.....
I hear of 3 and 4 dollar grams. Doesn’t matter if you do ‘t smoke. Sometimes it’s like zucchini. Everywhere, and free.
Steroids have some severe side-effects.
