White House asking Congress for $2.5 billion to fight coronavirus
The Hill ^ | February 24, 2020 | PETER SULLIVAN

The Trump administration announced Monday night that it will ask Congress for "at least $2.5 billion" in additional funding to fight the coronavirus.

The request indicates that the administration is seeking to step up its response to the virus as it spreads to more countries.

However, the request met quick resistance from Democrats. Just $1.25 billion of the request is for new funding, with the rest requested to be taken from existing health programs, including $535 million from fighting Ebola.

"The Trump administration’s request for emergency funding is woefully insufficient to protect Americans from the deadly coronavirus outbreak," said House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.).

She said the request would "raid money Congress has designated for other critical public health priorities" and still falls short of the total amount of funding needed.

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) went farther, assailing President Trump's response and calling the request "indicative of his towering incompetence."

House Democrats said they would instead draft their own funding bill for the virus.

Yes, and address the nation outlining every step undertaken. Keep the Democrats on the back foot and stay ahead of the virus.

Most likely after the election.

Judging from overnight events in South Korea and Italy, it will not take long at all.

I noticed that the State Department defied the CDC to bring some infected citizens on the same plane as others who had not tested positive. Makes me wonder what their goal is.

Booker returns pharma executive’s money after he claimed he hadn’t accepted any

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Cory Booker returned a donation from an executive at a pharmaceutical company after ABC News reported on it, according to a campaign aide. During last week’s presidential debate, the former Newark mayor took a strong stance against the pharmaceutical industry, saying that pharmaceutical companies should be “held criminally liable” for the health and opioid crisis across the country and further stated that his campaign doesn’t take contributions from the industry’s corporate PACs and executives.

So the Democrats are obstructing the work of the Trump Administration again, even if that Democrat stalling tactic might cost many American lives.

Meaning they all have people to pay off.

The Trump administration’s request for emergency funding is woefully insufficient to protect Americans ...

Trump asks for $2.5 Billion, Democrats only want to give him $1.5. Then the Democrats says his funding is insufficient. Playing politics. A prime example of what Democrats will do if put in charge of the health care system.

Not incidentally, we lost the 2018 election and along with it the House of Representatives mainly on the healthcare/health insurance issue.

100% correct.

It is very difficult to have an intelligent conversation here about this issue. So many people believe we have a free market system, or something like it. The capture of the market for "health insurance" DOLLARS that come out of workers' salaries and from taxpayers by an iron triangle of insurance companies, drug makers/researchers, and "nonprofit" hospitals is invisible to most people.

I will say it again: Donald Trump was elected by 60 000 Democrats in three states who believed him when he said he had a "great plan" that would "take care of everybody/cover everybody" and would "cost less".

The Republicans have no answer to this dilemma, and the rottenness at the heart of what our system has become is about to be exposed by a few thousand patients with a stupid virus.

So it’s inadequate for combating Corona, and therefore they give no funding. Brilliant./s

The Republicans have no answer to this dilemma, and the rottenness at the heart of what our system has become is about to be exposed by a few thousand patients with a stupid virus.

Why is the healthcare system so opaque? Why is it that the Democrats contrived a Rube Goldberg apparatus for Obama care? The answer is clear, the Democrats seek to disperse bennies to the electorate without leaving their fingerprints on taxes.

Just this morning downstream from here a thread listed a series of tax increases where Bolshevik Bernie sought to disguise taxes by pretending to levy them on on someone else, billionaires, corporate executives, "fossil fuel industry" or anyone else with a small voting count. As it is our healthcare system taxes jobs when we need more jobs and incentivizes fraud and waste. Further it is a rank example of crony capitalism devised by Obama to get the pharmaceuticals and hospitals on board, as you point out. All to disguise the cost and to misidentify those who have to bear the cost: the middle class.

You are absolutely correct, the Republicans are inheriting the wind from the seeds they planted during the first two years when they controlled all three branches of government. If Republicans were put on earth to cut taxes, they are always behind the power curve because the Democrats manage to disguise the taxes, or worse, push the cost of freebies off onto a national debt, and win elections.

And President Trump was furious at the swampdwellers/state department for doing that.

This is an additional amount to the BILLIONS already spent on preparedness and treatment.

I’m good with this. And to the whiners who say that Trump is just now getting engaged, where the heck have YOU BEEN for the past three months?!

He’s been engaged and PROACTIVE since DECEMBER!

I am far more scared of what crap the democrats will craft for the crisis. What are they going to stuff into it?

Then Trump vetoes it due to their towering greediness!

Democrats I hate thee! Stop your insanity and WORK WITH THE PRESIDENT IN TIME OF CRISIS.

I agree....this issue and how it is handled could be the X factor in the election.

The market lost close to 4% yesterday. A strong economy is part of what Trump is banking on for re-election.

IF we start having cases of coronavirus in significant numbers, and those are probably anything over 100 for the dims, they and their media allies will make out like the Plague is upon us and will blame Trump.

I do think the administration has been a little slow in implementing measures to keep folks traveling from China from entering. I'm trusting Trump to do the right thing on this issue.

Pres. Trump just ended a press conference in which his remarks tended to downplay the severity of the effects of the virus and to conclude that he and his administration had done all that is necessary.

Perhaps he knows something we do not know or perhaps he is simply being the optimist he usually is, but if he is wrong he will be seen to be on the wrong foot.

OR, maybe the Deep State intel folks are holding back the real story!

Considering all we're seeing in the media about analysts lying about Russia and the election I wouldn't put it past them to set him up.
