Fears of a global pandemic continue to grow as coronavirus cases spike in several countries, including Italy, South Korea, and Iran.
A staggering 50 people have died in the Iranian city of Qom from the new coronavirus this month, Iran's semiofficial ILNA news agency reported on Monday. The new death toll is significantly higher than the latest number of confirmed cases of infections that Iranian officials had reported just a few hours earlier by and which stood at just 12 deaths out of 47 cases, according to state TV.
The 50 deaths date back as far as Feb. 13, according to an Iranian official. Iran officially reported its cases and deaths from the virus on Feb. 19.
Authorities are struggling to contain and understand the outbreak in those countries, where infected cases have skyrocketed -- increasing over 2,000 percent in the past couple weeks.
Italy is considered Europe's first major outbreak and the largest outside of Asia. The number of infected cases jumped to 152, compared to just three 10 days ago.
The country is currently scrambling to disrupt the spread of the virus which has seen 110 cases in Milan, its financial district and Venice, known as a famous hub for tourists throughout the world. Events and soccer matches were canceled in the country, while some of its movie theatres were reportedly shuttered, including Milan's legendary La Scala.
We are worried about the situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran and in Italy, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference in Stockholm via a video link.
Cases in South Korea increased to 763 on Monday, with 161 more people infected within the last 24 hours. The country had just 28 infected cases on Feb. 14.

"I can tell you the president is very much on top of the threat that we face from coronavirus, stated Cotton. In fact, probably every conversation Ive had with him for the last month has involved, at least in part, coronavirus."
I thought WHO isn’t calling it “pandemic” anymore.
The ‘Locust’ are arriving folks, figuratively and literally. Literally in Africa. My the Lord help us.
Sorry, 50 people dying from the corona virus us NOT “staggering.” Bet more die from the regular ‘flu.
I didn’t think there would be a ‘starting gun’ to world-wide panic buying, but I didn’t consider the stock market.
...so here we are!
Its not clear that the death rate is any higher than any other flu, but it seems to be extraordinarily contagious. So overall, youd have more people who get it and thus more deaths, even if the rate is the same.
All countries with heavy smokers
And China shamelessly reports that only 11 new coronavirus cases outside of Hubei today.
12000 deaths in a typical flu year in US, stats in other countries according to population is up there to, so why the panic? Again most of these nations has socialist healthcare and are piss poor at best
The Iran reports are troubling. It has every appearance of being relatively widely spread in multiple parts of the country, but not well-identified - in a country with poor border control.
***...so here we are!***
What “Chinese” Gordon (Charlton Heston) said in KHARTOUM(1966) when all the Mahdi’s moslems in the world began their last attack.

What makes it ‘staggering’ is that yesterday there were supposedly 47 people with the coronavirus (a couple of days since reports of 7), and today they are reporting 50 dead. It is rather shocking to see how the diseases appearance seems to have been largely missed.
From the data so far, it's the opposite. Much less contagious than the flu but much more lethal. It's killing 2% and the flu kills 0.1% It infected 100k people over a two month period where the flu infected millions.
There could be a lot more cases that are unreported but that would mean a lower mortality. But the mortality outside of China is about 1% which is 10x higher than the flu.
Yeah, the problem with that is that it’s way more than 50 people dying. China’s (poorly) hiding the mortality rate.
It’s also got a longer, apparently inconsistent latency period and is contagious during the asyptomatic period, which is different (and potentially also more dangerous) than the flu.
There may be other vectors without symptoms.
