One waiter I encountered was approx. 45 years old and spent his life rotating from country to country, following the snow seasons. He was Australian and spoke English, German, French and Portuguese since he would spend ski seasons in Argentina............

i'm sure he'll end up in a socialist state for retirement so he can get free healthcare and stipends.

The market wage for any job is the wage that gets it filled - Econ 101.

You're absolutely right! So what is your point? Since you and your kid don't want to pick fruit or vegetables, the visa workers will..............

Interesting. Sounds like a skiing version of the surfer dudes from the original "Point Break" movie.

I met a mountain climber like that out in the Rocky Mountains a few years back. He spent his summers in North America and his North American winters down in the Andes.

Further....... the legislated minimum wage may in some areas be=< what most are actually earning

Me neither as long as I don't have to pay 80% taxes to fund a socialist state.

That's exactly what they are, that's their life. I'm in no position to judge them, they are probably happier in their lifestyles than I was while working for my employer for 35 years.......LOL!

It's all about enjoying what you do in life despite the obstacles that are destined to pop up isn't it?

And probably has $100,000 student loan debt hoping we'll pay for it because he's too busy having fun to make the payments.

How did we evolve from discussing the increase in the H2-B visa's for seasonal workers to your 80% tax rates?......

That we already have too many low-skill workers of our own.

Including many, many college students who ought to be able to get summer jobs. Let those who would hire pay the going rate for Americans!

There simply aren’t enough American workers willing to do labor. I just read an article the other day about the fact that pay is actually pretty good in many of these jobs (construction labor, for example) but the unemployed, both black and white, either think they’re too good for them or don’t have the work habits to show up, take orders and be safe to work around. Also, many have drug problems and if they get hired, only show up a couple of times.

I have family in construction, and believe me, they want American workers but they can’t get them. Skilled, yes, but the unskilled workers just aren’t there, or if they are, they aren’t interested in the jobs or can’t even do them. The foreign labor is motivated, doesn’t want to stay in the US but just wants to work and go home, and thus doesn’t want to get in trouble, shows up regularly, etc.

Fixing this would be great, but in the meantime, stuff still needs to be harvested, demolished, etc.

The modern college student doesn’t want to work. It’s beneath him. He just wants to get loans and then howl about how unfair it is for him to have to pay them back.

Not the college students I’ve taught. There are plenty who would be up for it. Cheap imported labor has made employers lazy.

If your family didn’t have access to cheap, likely illegal, labor, they still would be in the construction business making it work.

The issue is when competition within an industry hires cheap, likely illegal, labor that makes it difficult for you to compete without following suit.

That’s what we need to stop. We don’t need to import more labor. How about all those being released from prison? They’re perfect for entry-level construction jobs.

My point is that for the market wage, some Americans will want to do those jobs; suppressing that wage with foreigners is anti-American.

Look at this pittance paid for average entry-level construction jobs:

Used to be even entry-level construction paid well.

Have a friend who works at a local college. In several of the jobs (that pay minimum wage + 70 cents) they can’t get native born workers to take the jobs. So more and more of these jobs are being filled (where they can) with international students.

They can’t pay more per hour due to some law (maybe Federal), but students just don’t want to work at those jobs for those rates.
