Trump says he's considering Doug Collins for DNI post; GOP rep says not interested
Fox News ^ | 2/21/20 | Tyler Olsen

President Trump said late Thursday that he is considering Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga, for the permanent Director of National Intelligence job, a move that could resolve the mini-crisis in the GOP surrounding Collins' challenge against incumbent Se. Kelly Loeffler, R-Ga, in Georgia's upcoming special election.

Yet Collins told Fox Business Network's Maria Bartiromo on Friday morning that while he's humbled by the possible offer, he is focused on running for the Senate and would not accept the job.

"This is not a job that interests me, at this time it's not one that I would accept because I'm running a Senate race down here in Georgia", he said.

DC would make an excellent senator, IMHO.

Yep, Mitch was trying to set him up. Trump nominate him, then the Senate not confirm him. Collins could see that coming.

McConnell only wants Amnesty Senators.
That’s why Collins is not already the Senator.

Collins would make a great Senator. I think he would win but it is not a lock. The rats almost took the Governor’s with that horrible woman. So with tepid GOPe support for Collins if he knocks out Kelly Loeffler who knows.

I think there’s an outside possibility that Collins will win the senatorial primary and lose in the general. That’s what the White House is afraid of. GA isn’t the reliably red state it was for several decades. Trump won the state by 5% in 2016. I doubt the demographics* of the state (i.e. the ratio of non-Hispanic whites relative to the rest) have improved since then. The near-victory (by 1.4%) in 2018 of the Democratic blob that wants to be VP, is a sign that GA is now trending purple.

* Given that the southern states are wins for the GOP despite massive black minorities because southern whites (almost but not quite) vote for the GOP the way blacks vote nationally for the Democrats, demographics are key.

I heard a sound bite from a Collins interview where he said Stacy Abrams was a good friend of his, and that she was a really nice person. I was shocked, having only observed the angry gap-toothed ghettopotomus portion of her personality.

Actually, we need him as the ranking GOP member of the House Judiciary Committee more than anything else.

This seems like a strange move for him.

As someone else on FR posted a couple of weeks ago ... leaving his House seat and top committee assignment to run for junior Senator from Georgia is like giving up your job as captain of a Navy destroyer to become a deck hand on a merchant ship.

This is certainly off-topic, but you appear to have the wrong expectations of FOX.

FOX isn’t after your viewership, first and foremost. The market for “ratings” is in the past. Look at CNN. Do they care about viewership?

FOX (and the others) is selling its ability to manipulate YOU. That’s the only extent to which viewership matters, who and how many can be influenced. The money is no longer advertising dollars, but much bigger money from backers and owners who want “friendly feelings toward China’s accendency” or the same for NAFTA and illegal immigration.

They’re selling the ability to dish out the kind of crap that you’re complaining about.

I don’t see it changing anytime, soon.

We really need reform of the media industry. The News Business isn’t about the News and it’s not exactly a Business either. As you indicate, there are backers and owners that want to see certain propaganda pushed.

I think the government should find a way to break up the near-monopoly of media control and get back to a marketplace approach rather than a propaganda approach.

What exactly does this country gain by having Collins representing Georgia in the U.S. Senate instead of Loeffler?

One big reason the "GOP Establishment" is behind Loeffler is that she's very wealthy and can finance her own campaign. This is a huge deal for this particular Senate seat because the GOP has to prepare for two elections in the next three years. This 2020 election is just to serve the remainder of Isakson's term. That term ends in 2022, so whoever wins in November will have to run again two years later.

The Democrats have always done Senate calculus better than the Uniparty Pubbies.

That's why smash-mouth plays like Doug Jones/Roy Moore and the Ted Stevens Take-out actually work for them.

Meanwhile, we have Keating Five McLame, Pierre Delecto and The Weak Sisters.
