The Iowa legislature has introduced a bill, SF 459, to allow employees and volunteers who have carry permits, to keep firearms in their locked vehicle, in parking lots, even if the employer forbids firearms on their property. The bill passed out of the Senate subcommittee on 23 January 2020.
2. An employer shall not prohibit an employee in possession of a permit issued pursuant to section 724.6 or 724.7 from carrying, transporting, or possessing a firearm or ammunition, if the firearm and ammunition are out of sight and inside the locked motor vehicle of the employee on the real property comprising the employees place of employment, provided the motor vehicle is parked in a location designated or allowed for employee parking, and if the carrying, transportation, or possession of the firearm or ammunition is otherwise lawful under the laws of this state.
3. An employer, owner, or lawful possessor of the property on which the employer is located shall be immune from any claim, cause of action, or lawsuit brought by any person seeking damages that are alleged, directly or indirectly, as a result of any firearm or ammunition brought onto the property of the employer, owner, or lawful possessor by an employee pursuant to this section.
Several other states have passed parking lot legislation. The argument is, allowing an employer to forbid an employee to store a firearm in their locked vehicle, effectively disarms them on their

After constitutional carry was implemented in our state thieves began breaking into cars to get guns because so many people started keeping them in their glove compartments.
I no longer keep one there.
A well regulated militia, being necessary for the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
no law necessary... the above says it all. keep it in your car, keep in in your pocket. all good.
I’m with you. I had a gun stolen out of my locked car and will no longer keep one there.
> even if the employer forbids firearms on their property <
Im as big a 2A supporter as anyone. But I also believe in property rights. So I would say - very reluctantly - that if you want to keep a gun in your locked car, dont park on your employers property.
If federal agents can lose their guns from their cars without recourse, why shouldn’t civilians have the same rights?
Seth Rich comes to mind ...
I would rather get fired for carrying at work than risk having the weapon stolen from my car - or worse yet, have to run to the parking lot when the crazies start shooting up the place.
I wonder how many people who have their weapons stolen from their locked cars have told someone - anyone - that they keep their weapon in their car?
For me, no one - and I mean NO ONE - knows if or when I carry. It is the equivalent of ‘shoot, shovel, and shut up.’
Iowa should ditch the “permit” concept.
Follow Missouri’s lead...
The Firearms Car Theft bill.

I agree with that 100%. You dont need a permit to exercise any of your other rights. So you shouldnt need a permit to exercise your 2A rights.
As for folks on parole or probation, they already are prohibited from carrying firearms. So no permit is needed to weed those folks out.
Years ago, Iowa was a “may issue” permit state.
You would need to appear before the county sheriff to get his permission.
Then, take a class on gun handling.
The permit lasted one year and had to be renewed.
Carrying large sums of money was not sufficient...
A threat to your life was almost mandatory.
I use chains for what it’s worth to lock my gun up
At least stops the smash and grab

I only keep mine there if I am at a place where they are not allowed, like hospitals. I'm not supposed to bring it into the office, but I am in a high-crime area, so...
I have been trying to figure out a non glove-compartment place to stash one, but I haven’t come up with one yet.

I use the snapsafe that is picture #2. The cable makes it hard to snatch and grab.
We have this legislation in Alabama, passed in 2013. A former HR woman at my employer (who came from a “blue” state) like to had a conniption fit when she realized that all the “rednecks” I work with could keep guns in our vehicles in the parking lot. Not that we didn’t have them before, but she didn’t know about it. Hoplophobe.
Meaning, we can either choose to be armed on our way to and from work, or we don’t have a job? It must be nice to sit behind your keyboard like a king and decide who lives and who dies.
