The Utah Republican Party is reportedly considering multiple resolutions following Sen. Mitt Romney’s vote to convict President Donald Trump in the impeachment trial, including a resolution calling for his resignation.
According to local Salt Lake City news outlet 2KUTV, “the Utah Republican Party has pending resolutions on Romney: one that expresses support for Trump’s acquittal, another that supports legislation to recall a U.S Senator and a third that calls for Romney to ‘immediately resign’ from office.”
The Utah GOP will possibly vote on these resolutions on Saturday, February 29, the report also states. It is unclear what kind of support the resolutions have.
Romney was the single Republican who voted for Trump’s removal from office on the charge of abuse of power. He did not, however, vote for Trump’s conviction on the charge of obstruction of Congress.
Trump was acquitted anyway with the rest of the Republicans voting for acquittal on both charges, and every Senate Democrat voting for removal.
Following Romney’s vote, Donald Trump Jr. attacked the Utah senator, calling for him to be expelled from the Republican Party.

As much as I’d like to see every last RINO (not just Mitt) driven out of the party, everyone knows Mitt totally hates Trump with a passion.
Given that, I wouldn’t be surprised one bit to see him throw his hat in the ring as an “Independent” just to pull enough (R) voters to throw the election to the Dems. Yes, he hates him that much - country be damned.
I first thought this wouldn’t be possible given filing deadlines..but far as I can tell, there are a heck of a lot of states with deadlines crazily close to election day as long as you’re filing (I). (D) and (R) are pretty much non-starters..but I is wide open (ugh).
All that said, if Mitt were to go there - he’d probably become the most hated man of this generation, by far..and would likely go down in the history books as totally torpedoing America for his own spiteful self interests.

You realize you’ve described the actions of Teddy Roosevelt during the 1912 election. When Taft was selected by the Republican party, TR got pissed and started his own party. Net result Woodrow Wilson was elected and the results of that are still hurting our country.

Resolutions are useless grandstanding. A state can’t recall its senator, and Congress isn’t going to expel him, so they are stuck with Romney until the next election.
Mitt claims to be a very religious, honorable man who had to do the right thing. So, Mittens, do another right thing and resign your seat. Run in the election for your replacement and see if the people of Utah agree you had to do what you did. Moroni says it’s the right thing to do.
As time passed I think he truly regretted what he did. He pretty much stayed out of politics from then on. Perot was a true patriot.
