SHANGHAINearly half of the U.S. companies in China say their global operations are already seeing an impact from business shutdowns due to the coronavirus outbreak, according to a poll by Shanghais American Chamber of Commerce. Some 78 percent of the respondents also said they do not have sufficient staff at their Chinese plants to resume full production, as public health restrictions make it harder to workers to return to their jobs after an extended holiday.
The survey polled 109 companies with manufacturing operations in Shanghai, Suzhou, Nanjing and the wider Yangtze River Delta.
Forty-eight percent of respondents said plant shutdowns have already impacted their global supply chains, while almost all others expect an impact within the next month, the survey said.
The biggest problem is a lack of workers as they are subjected to travel restrictions and quarantines, the number one and number two problems identified in the survey. Anyone coming from outside the immediate area undergoes a 14-day quarantine, said AmCham President Ker Gibbs.

An earlier AmCham survey showed that the majority of U.S. firms with operations in China expect the virus outbreak to cut revenue this year, with some accelerating plans to shift their supply chains out of the country.
Meanwhile hard working, skilled AMERICAN workers are not too affected by the pandemic. NO SYMPATHY HERE!
That’s a shame.
Hopefully it won’t affect executive bonuses.
So, move operations to India, Vietnam, Malaysia or other low cost countries in the region which do not have missiles aimed at the United States.
My wife knows someone whose son was in Wuhan working for some sort of pharmaceutical company (probably not a bioweapons lab). When this thing started hitting, he tried to get out and it was a real struggle. The city was locked down and getting back to the US was not easy but he finally made it.
He flew back to Wuhan last week and resumed his job (apparently he thinks it’s a good job).
Not the decision I would have made ...
the trickle down effect..how are these people suppose to earn money for food and rent to live. Is the Commie govt going to pay for all of that?
Think ahead. China won’t admit it but their agricultural production will drop as the chain of fertilizers, labor, harvest, storage, packaging and transport to market becomes increasingly difficult. The Chinese will resist but they will be forced to import huge amounts of foodstuffs to prevent serious shortages and social disruptions especially in urban areas.
oh they will be when medicines and vehicle parts are in short supply or nonexistent hard work means nothing if there are no essentials to buy like food because all the trucks are broken down lacking chinese made parts
Actually, they’re already doing that per another article.
How *long* they’re going to do that is another question entirely.
There are penalties for putting all your eggs in one [Chinese] basket.Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Good thing the majority of our trade is with Canada and Mexico.
Don’t be too sure of that.
When parts and components supply dry up then people will be getting laid off here.
I am already getting notifications from my suppliers that we are having supply line disruptions and can expect shortages of certain products this summer.
How much money am I going to make if I can’t sell something? And how much of my stuff are my clients going to need if their business slows down because they’re running out of components and materials?
Whatt most people don’t realize is that even if this were 100% restricted to China there would still be significant economic chain reactions over here. But I think they’re going to figure it out after it happens.
RE: ‘US Firms’ in China Report Staff Shortages as Coronavirus Hits Global Operations.....
They should have seen the writing on the wall over a year ago when the trade war started.
In a world where supply chains are very fragile, one should consider ( well here’s the more appropriate use of the word ) — DIVERSIFYING OPERATIONS.
Relying on one country ( authoritarian at that ) for your main supply chain source is not wise.
Well, time to move back the manufacture of necessities to the US!
Following your analysis a bit further, what happens to equities markets and Trump’s re-election?
apparently there’s a drawback to globalization
Ya think?
bkmk
That’s right...but you can bet China’s doing all necessary to make that as difficult as possible for those there.....one way or another.
