NIH official says coronavirus 'on the verge' of becoming global pandemic unless containment becomes 'more successful'

A top official at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) said Sunday that the coronavirus outbreak is “on the verge” of becoming a global pandemic unless containment of the deadly disease becomes “more successful.”

Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CBS’s “Face The Nation” that multiple person-to-person transmissions need to occur in multiple countries in order to reach the pandemic threshold.

Fauci said that as of Sunday, 24 countries have more than 500 cases, with several of them reaching the second and third transmission of the virus.

“Technically speaking, the [World Health Organization] wouldn’t be calling this a global pandemic. But it certainly is on the verge of that happening reasonably soon unless containment is more successful than it is right now,” he said.

Containment, even if it ultimately fails, gives us more time to develop treatment options and capacity. It will save lives.

They’re also of asian descent

It’s already been stated that they are much more receptive to getting it because of genetic reasons that I couldn’t understand a word of :)

Apparently they have more of some kind of receptor that makes them more likely to get it AND die from it.

I know some westerners are already back home recuperating after being in the hospital.

So we CAN get it and one of the people who recovered said it IS Brutal.

So we need to shut down for a while.

Even the economy taking a hit is nothing compared to maybe 10s of thousands dying.

I must need it, as it doesn’t cause me any problems. To all those who care...if anyone you know ends up in the hospital needing critical care, try to make sure they get LOADS OF VITAMIN C by IV....!!!

It is difficult to overdo with buffered ascorbic acid, in my case I have been taking calcium ascorbate for many, many years anywhere in a range of 3 to 5 grams or between 3k and 5k mg per day, can be divided up. Amongst others Linus Pauling swore by it, by the way he was a Nobel Prize winner if this means anything. More benefits are derived if taken in conjunction with NAC, about at least twice as much C as NAC as both are highly potent anti oxidants, not only that NAC will also get rid of certain poisenous substances from your system. The worst what may happen is that you may get the trots and then you reduce he amount of C. Hope it helps may send you more info about NAC. Stay healthy and well!

Here is an excerpt from an article by Dr. Mercola you can find the rest by Googling for it. The whole article was just a little too long to be posted here.

The Many Benefits of NAC — One of the Most Important Supplements You’ve Likely Never Heard Of

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) boosts production of glutathione, an important antioxidant that helps reduce free radical damage and plays a role in the detoxification of heavy metals and other harmful substances
In emergency medicine, NAC is used as an antidote for acetaminophen toxicity resulting from an overdose. Mortality due to acetaminophen toxicity is largely eliminated when NAC is promptly administered
The most common use of NAC is for liver support, but it’s also showing tremendous promise in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease
NAC also shows particular promise in the treatment of mental health disorders, including PTSD, depression and drug abuse, and appears to improve fertility in both men and women
NAC is safe and inexpensive, and has been commercially available for a long time. It’s also generally well-tolerated and has no known serious side effects
By Dr. Mercola
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) — a precursor which is needed for glutathione biosynthesis — is an incredibly useful supplement that few people have even heard of. Many of its benefits relate back to the fact that it helps boost production of glutathione, an important antioxidant your body produces naturally that helps reduce free radical damage and plays a role in the detoxification of heavy metals and other harmful substances.
NAC is both safe and inexpensive, and has been commercially available for a long time. It’s also generally well-tolerated and has no known serious side effects. Considering its wide array of health benefits, it’s a supplement worthy of consideration for many. As noted in a recent medical review of NAC’s many clinical uses, it is a:1
“… potential treatment option for diseases characterized by the generation of free oxygen radicals. Studies have shown no maternal or fetal harmful effects of NAC treatment … NAC prevents apoptosis [editor’s note: programmed cell death] and oxygen related genotoxicity in endothelial cells by increasing intracellular levels of glutathione and decreasing mitochondrial membrane depolarization.”

“At this point, the focus should include effective treatment strategies. There’s no way this is going to be contained.”

Slowing it down so the hit on our emergency response is spread out over time rather than all at once is important. I agree with you, it can’t be contained any more than the flu can be contained. But we still have no idea what “not contained” looks like in a Western nation.

Combine that with what has to be a long-run project of making us less dependent on China, or for that matter on any nation, for almost all pharmaceuticals, N95 masks, rare earths, microprocessors and much more. Our supply chain of critical material MUST be diversified. That will take years.

If this virus is not a 1918 Flu level killer, it may be the best thing that happened to the United States if it pushes us ahead with that diversification.

“Comment: Dr. Andrew W. Saul, an international expert on vitamin therapy, says: “The coronavirus can be dramatically slowed or stopped completely with the immediate widespread use of high doses of vitamin C.””

I’m not anti-vitamin, in fact I supplement more than the average bear.

But statements like this are nonsense. He has not run double blind experiments that validate broad statements like this. At this stage, there isn’t even any existing epidemilogical evidence that would support such a statement.

Try it if you like. It won’t hurt you. But don’t bet your life on it because it is wild speculation masquerading as science.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this vitamin C / NAC approach. It is appreciated.

Test run on bio-weapon?

I don't think so.
The Chinese can't hide what they are doing. There are TOO many eyes and ears on them. That is especially true since they WANT the Chinese from other countries to "return home," especially if those ex-patriots are skilled/educated.

I might be dead wrong, of course. I hope not.

Millions will get very sick around the world. It leaves many with heart damage or lung damage

It's the other way around. Those people with existing heart and lung problems will get the disease easier, worse and suffer more.

“The virus doesn’t kill everyone—only SOME children and SOME old people. Maybe the Chinese think that is an acceptable cost.”
1. Read somewhere today that very few children are getting it.
2. One problem right now is China is so huge and disorganized that even if China wants to keep decent records they really can’t. I haven’t seen suggestions from NIH or WHO regarding what more China can do.
3. Now, here’s something slightly encouraging that I read: Underestimating the cases means the death rate is probably LOWER than current figures show. Many cases going unnoticed as people often recover easily and/or have little or no symptoms. Dying tends to get noticed, light cases tend to not get noticed.

======================================

1. That IS interesting. Maybe it's because children have fewer life-caused lung and heart problems.

2. I think that not quite true.
If the Chinese government WANTS to keep tabs on people, they can and they will, with impunity. They CAN be very organized.
I somehow doubt that the Chinese government will accept ANY/ALL advice from outside of their country. It is a MOST CLANNISH society and they DO think that their culture IS superior to the rest of humanity.
Their own egoism gets in the way of improvement.

3. That is good news and says that the disease is NOT an automatic killer. Not all viruses are the Bubonic Plague.

======================================

CHINA knows that the filth they CHOOSE to live in is the CAUSE of plague.
Cleanliness CO$T$ and the Chinese are TOO CHEAP to pay for it.

Is it a “global pandemic” when one one or two people on a continent are infected? and the other 90-something percent are gathered in one place...China?

The "rest of the world" knows the deal: China lives in the filth of their own making. The Chinese government, educators, media and anyone with brains know it and are TOO CHEAP to fix it.

CLEANLINESS COSTS...and they don't want to pay the price.

If they don't HAFTA and they don't WANNA, they ain't GONNA.

two children so far

China has 1.38 BILLION [1,380,000,000] people and TWO children have died? Do you REALLY think that there is cause for concern?
