The Bureau of Land Management has announced plans to fund 11,000 miles (17,703 kilometers) of strategic fuel breaks in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada and Utah in an effort to help control wildfires.
The fuel breaks are intended to prop up fire mitigation efforts and help protect firefighters, communities and natural resources, The Oregonian reported Saturday.
According to the BLM, wildfires are becoming bigger and more frequent across the Great Basin states. Between 2009 and 2018, more than 13.5 million acres of BLM land burned in the project area.

Fuel breaks are those restroom breaks at gas stations, right?
Many years overdue!
I was thinking fire breaks might be nice.
But depending on how much fuel we’re talking about, fuel breaks might blow the fire out too.
Bureaucratic speak.
The government owns/controls WAY too much of our land.
These are commonly known as dirt roads.
The big question is can I drive on them in hunting season? The Feds have been going bonkers on closing a lot of the access roads we use.
The government owns/controls WAY too much of our land.
....
That’s what I was thinking. Look at that map. ...almost all government. ..... What the heck is national grasslands in Nevada?
Think of all the pencil pusher government “workers” payed by taxpayer’s sweat at these government agencies.
If you’re going to carve it up, might as well put in some oil and water pipelines.
Hi.
Why are fire breaks called fuel breaks now?
Here’s a novel idea. Let the electric utilities maintain their transmission line right of ways.

Probably would never have happened without President Trump.
During those years the way wild land fires were managed changed - the result bigger fires. Before that the technique of assigning maximum resources to smaller fires was used to deal with them promptly. Only in the very recent two fire seasons have they started to aggressively attack fires in the initial phase. There is big money in fires getting to a tier one level.
Salmon Idaho the forest service plowed the roads and planted trees there.
All across the country at all levels of government roads have been closed off and let grow back up in trees.
All part of the man bad earth good movement.
I said that on a similar social media story, and a Lefty response was: "The government doesn't own anything, we own the government!"
I can't even...
Only took the AP writer (and I use that word guardedly) to tell the reader what a “fuel break” is. AP - Almost Professional - NOT!!
Get the private sector involved. The govt should allow the lumber and paper companies to harvest and replant as they used to do before all the regulations were enacted.
Wait! What about the snail darters, titmice, and horny frogs? It’s going to devastate them. I can hear the plants screaming now! This has got to STOP!
If you toured the area, you would know that no one wants the land the government still owns.
The land was not settled because it can’t be economically farmed
