US Will Test People With Flu-Like Symptoms for New Coronavirus

The United States will start testing people in five cities who are showing flu-like symptoms for the new coronavirus COVID-19, a top Centers for Disease Control (CDC) official said on Friday.

“CDC has begun working with five public health labs across the U.S. to tap into their ability to conduct community-based influenza surveillance, so that we can begin testing people with flu-like symptoms for novel coronavirus,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters in a phone call.

The cities are Los Angeles and San Francisco in California, Seattle in Washington state, Chicago in Illinois, and New York City.

More sites will be announced in the coming weeks.

The same labs that are testing for influenza in the United States will test samples that turn up negative for the flu for the virus.

Testing previously only took place among those who have symptoms consistent with COVID-19—coughing, fever, and respiratory issues—and who have been to places where the outbreak is spreading or had contact with confirmed or suspected cases.

At my local Costco (Seattle suburb) I bet on a week day (my usual shopping day, 40% full parking lot) it is 60% Asian, 20% muslim/indian, 20% white.

I made the rare trek a few weekends ago. Maybe 2% white (and the parking lot 98% full).

Although I guess on the good side of things - it keeps Costco (and Walmart, Fred Meyer, Target, etc) open.

All liberals should be tested.

The CDC test kits are not working properly to find the virus. Oh boy.

The fourth one is in Hong Kong, which is Mainland China as far as I am concerned.

“One Nation-Two Systems,” as the Communist Party always says - until an epidemic starts, anyway.

Singapore, which is 1,600 miles from Hong Kong, actually has more corona infections than Hong Kong.

Outside China and Hong Kong, there are about 625 cases, less than 1% of the total, which seems like good news to me, since the infection started more than 2 months ago.

Also, the death toll outside China looks substantially lower.

In China, the death toll has held steady around 2.5% of infections since they began posting data in early January.

Outside China, the death toll has been consistently under 1%.

who pays for these tests?

Your insurance probably.

If I go to my doctor with the flu and haven’t been to China do they test me?

If you live in one of the five cities yes. Apparently there have been enough people who have been to China in those areas that there is concern that it might have been brought in to the country and is now in the general population.

And, it provides jobs for all the people who speak English As A Second Language.

I am actually completely comfortable being a minority (49.8% non-Hispanic white) in downtown Bellevue.

My issues are entirely political.

First - H1B Asian labor

Second - My Congressional District, in 2018, voted 70% for the incumbent Democrat, and 30% for some guy from the Socialist Party!

Some how I feel this will certainly happen...

I think they are just trying to break it to us gently.

It’s early. We are several weeks away from China and even a couple of weeks behind Singapore. This is a slow moving virus. Onset to death can take as long as a month, ad our first case in the US was Jan 21. so, we will know something one way or another in the next few weeks.

It is way to early to make any assumptions that it won’t be bad outside China.

And just wait until Amazon expands in Bellevue. Sort of a mini-California issue. They are leaving Seattle because it is being destroyed by liberals/communists. But then they just bring those same voters over to Bellevue.

Hong Kong is a two minute bus ride from mainland China.

One death and 56 confirmed infections after two months in Hong Kong sounds quite encouraging to me.

This was likely circulating in Wuhan weeks before people started traveling to Hong Kong for Chinese New Year.

By the way, the first death in Wuhan was with 59 infections.

I am more concerned that China supplies many of our antibiotics than I am about the corona virus.

The USA mortality rate for the 1918 Spanish flu was 2.5%.

The great killer was the infection rate - close to 30% in the USA.

We can't cure people who have corona.

But we can bring the infection rate WAY down from 30%.

All I have heard is that the test is available to people with some of the symptoms. In the situation you mentioned, a casino, yes, lots of ways that germs can be spread. If I came down with a fever and cough after this, I would submit to testing, and maybe there will be some case that can be made for these tests to become mandatory rather than simply available.

No one wants the lack of freedom that a major health hazard could impose, but it may happen. I do not know when I would buy in, but I am certain that if the number of cases expands and is out of control with current methods, they perhaps more would be welcomed.
