Space Force is looking for ideas 'in good taste' on what it should call its members

Following its official creation this past December, the Space Force is looking for ideas on what the members of the newest branch of the U.S. military should be called.

"The U.S. Space Force is looking for feedback from U.S. military space professionals on what Space Force members should be called – similar to how the Air Force refers to its members as ‘Airmen’ or the Army refers to its members as ‘Soldiers,’" the Space Force wrote in a statement on its website.

It continued: "Given the significance a name has to the identity and culture of an organization, the Space Force is taking a deliberate approach to ensure Space Force member titles and ranks appropriately convey the nature of the newest Armed Forces branch and the domain in which it operates.”

Earlier this month, Lt. Gen. David Thompson, vice commander of the Space Force, said they won't be referred to as "spacemen."

In addition to what it calls its members, the Space Force is also asking for ideas on ranks and names for operational units, the military branch added.

Don't be silly, Space Cadets is what we will call those who attend Star Fleet Academy.

I think the pilots could be Space Cowboys (Picker, Griner, you got a bogey on your tails … Joker, Smoker, Midnight Toker … slingshot around the moon and take out their base! Roger that Sinner!)[Steve Miller - The Joker]

Space Attack craft should be Vipers [Battlestar Galactica] The Officers will obviously be Space Suits.

Star Lord will be the equivalent of a General or Admiral. [Guardians of the Galaxy]

Space Marines will be called Stormtroopers [Star Wars], but their official name will be Mobile Infantry [Starship Troopers]

Generically however, they will be Centauri [Babylon 5]

“Space Force is looking for ideas ‘in good taste’ on what it should call its members”

i’m kind of guessing that “Space Cadet” is out of the question ...

In Star Trek, the basic enlisted rank was “Crewman.”

Well, that’s how I feel about the mere idea of going into space...nuts!

That said, I wouldn’t be going anyway because I’m too old, claustrophobic (couldn’t be in submarine, either) and anyway this has nothing to do with me. I think it’s a great and necessary initiative, though.

That said, I’m voting for Space Force Astronaut, or Astro for short.

Do they really need a special name? The USCG has the official name of "Coast Guardsman",but the unofficial title of "Coastie."

They could have the official title of "Space Forcemen," and an unofficial title that will be derogatorily bestowed upon them by the other services, such as "Space Cases."

I wondered how far down this one would pop up.

At least the newbies, no doubt about it...

Space Cadets might be a good name if there weren’t so many of them around already.

I like it, but not exactly.

How about “Off World Force(s)”?

If there are Non-military forces, that could be appropriate, but this would apply to any location, and ranks would be commensurate with the Moniker OWMF-”rank here”, but...your idea is also good.

Trumpman and Trumpwoman.

“Earlier this month, Lt. Gen. David Thompson, vice commander of the Space Force, said they won’t be referred to as “spacemen.”

Bow to the inevitable, they will probably end up being called “spacemen”, no matter what the “official” term is. Unless the “official” term is stupid, a double-entendre, catchier or all three.

Although, they would be use to being out in space.

Hmmmm. Well given that when deployed they will quite literally be 'somewhere over the rainbow' a Wizard of Oz themed name seems appropriate.

Due to the cost of getting a pound of payload into orbit, they should select smaller people to fly. Call them Munchkins.

Or in homage to America's first astronaut, Ham, and because their mission would be to throw a monkey wrench into any foe's plans, call them flying monkeys!

Okay, I think I get your thought there.

Remember, we still call our troops our Armed Forces.

That doesn’t conflict with civilian efforts in an Earth based region.

I think the same would hold true in space, with contractors and other civilians who work there.

Off World Forces should cover it.

That may not be the group consensus, but I like it.

Did you mean:

English sucks as a second language. I learn stupid and contradictory rules every day.

I've been speaking it as a first language for some 65 years, I'm still learning the rules...

Space forces are actually missiliers and people managing space navigation and spy sattelites. They aren’t a sort of marines storming outer planets and shooting aliens.
Russian military pioneered space forces at the time now mostly merged with Air Force.
Taking it into account it makes sense to copy the structure from AF. Replace ‘air’ with ‘space’ if you want the hype but I think it would sound comic.
