Public school district in Arizona REQUIRING parents to sign “safe gun storage” form

PHOENIX — An organization of moms against gun violence is applauding a recent decision by the Phoenix Union High School Board.

The board voted unanimously last week to require the parent or guardian of the district’s 27,000 students to read and sign a gun storage safety form.

"This is just an obvious thing we can do to prevent future tragedies,” said board member Lela Alston.

The "Secure Storage Notification Resolution" requires that gun storage and safety information be included in the student handbook of all 27,000 students of the district's 20 high schools.

The resolution was prompted by the groups Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action For Gun Sense in America. It highlights how unlocked guns play a prominent role in unintentional shootings involving children, gun suicides and campus shootings.

Phoenix Union Board President Stephanie Parra said the resolution is a small but meaningful step to educate parents.

“From time to time, guns have made an appearance on campuses," said board president Stephanie Parra. “When we speak to moms, often it's because the parent did not properly store their firearm at home.”

I’d send the form back with “get your daddy to sign this sucka”...well. something like that. I don’t mind them sending the form. Just don’t require me to sign anything...fool. That’s where we have a problem. Sign or what?

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

What is next?

Safe sex form?
Drinking and driving form?
Don’t feed the animals form?
Brush you teeth form?
Use proper gender pronouns form?

A great use of taxpayer education dollars!

The school has NO business requiring school parents how to conduct their lives.

But why do we oppose providing safe gun handling information?

________________________________________

Because the intent of this form has nothing to do with safe gun handling or storage.

It’s all about submitting to the gun grabbling lobby that daily demands more restrictions and more intrusions on your 2A rights.

WHO IN THE HELL ARE THE SCHOOLS to pressure parents to do SQUAT ALL about guns?

I guess it depends on what you assume their motives are. 40-50 years ago, lots of schools had competitive shooting teams as part of their sports programs. Before that, these programs were among the many that kept the 'art' of marksmanship growing in this country. If the intent is to educate, then we should welcome a (albeit small) step back in that direction.

Okay! if that is what they want.

but the Board and Administration must sign a statement that they will each take PERSONAL responsibility for the parents children, especially for the behavior of pedophiles teachers and radical teaching agendas not approved by a majority of the parents.

Also keeping drugs off of campus and protecting constitutional right of all children not just democrats approved.

There are other issues we could put into this declarative statement of responsibility by the Board and Administration and it would also be interesting to hear their response.

It is obvious thing to do to protect our children.

This will not stand any kind of legal test at all.

Interesting.

I don’t like the idea that a parent has to sign it.

I think I would reply “I store my guns at home safely. I’ve done my part. When will the public schools begin to teach gun safety and how to properly use a firearm, by a licensed instructor?”

No, but if they are reminding parents that guns should be kept away from kids when not in proper supervision, I dont have any problem with that. It really depends on what the motives here are and how they go about implementing those motives. Hard to assess from just the article. Really need to see the form to say if it is helpful or something to be used for punitive action.

This is data mining at its finest. Using kids to do adults work which I equate to child abuse to get what you want. Where will this lead us to? Can the school district penalize the student if dad has a firearm removed from the safe to take hunting? It seems like this is where it is heading. Turning your kids into the new version of Hitlerjugend. History has taught us nothing and those who wish to control us have learned everything. This is forcing parental compliance through intimidation of children.

You think schools are bringing back gun clubs with this letter?

They want a record of gun ownership and are using the children to do it.

If I touched my fathers guns without his permission my ass would not make it to school for a week.

What grabs me about this story is that so many in what I will call officialdom think they can do ANYTHING they want.

“I have no problem with a school sending to every parent a form that tells them how to safely store their gun, and requiring that they sign to indicate they received the form.”

How about forcing parents to sign a form about the four food groups and the best meals at dinner time? Or about the proper bedtime for a kid? Or one about backyard swimming pool safety?

The school has zero GD business lecturing, hectoring, and educating parents. Hell, they suck at educating kids.
Parents don’t need some 26 year old educator lecturing them.

“The “Secure Storage Notification Resolution” requires that gun storage and safety information be included in the student handbook of all 27,000 students...”

As I read it, the safe storage doc is part of a much larger student handbook. I believe the parent signs to acknowledge receipt of the student handbook, not just to the gun-safety bit. (In my experience, the only time a parent actually reads the student handbook is when their kid gets punished for something or wants some other kid punished.)

No to your question.

From the article “The “Secure Storage Notification Resolution” requires that gun storage and safety information be included in the student handbook of all 27,000 students of the district’s 20 high schools.”

So I dont see where you get the conclusion of your next statement.

I am going to take a guess that this “Mom’s” program would like to do more to curtail guns, and on that I would not agree. But it seems like the school board may have taken a complaint from this org and presented a reasonable response that brings the subject up for discussion. I am not local so I cant infer any more than that.

And before you know it, the school district has a nice file on who has what guns and how they are stored...sounds like defacto registration to me.
