CHAMONIX, France - French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday the melting of Mont Blanc’s main glacier is irrefutable proof of global warming, as he sought to burnish his environmentalist credentials ahead of municipal elections next month.
During a visit to the “Mer de Glace” (sea of ice) - France’s largest glacier which has shrunk dramatically in recent years - Macron met scientists and announced new protective measures for the area, including higher fines for littering.
“What we are seeing with the evolution of the glacier is irrefutable proof of global warming and climate change and the toppling of an entire ecosystem,” Macron said in a speech after going up the glacier.
The Alpine glacier above the mountain town of Chamonix has been a tourist draw since the 19th century, but over the course of the 20th century it lost an average thickness of 50 metres (164 ft). The shrinking has sped up in the past two decades.
“A landscape is being deformed before our eyes and species are disappearing quickly. The fight for biodiversity is a fight for our own survival and is inseparable from the fight against global warming,” Macron said.
Critics say that following the success of France’s green party at the 2019 European Union election and with municipal elections due in March, the Chamonix visit and other ecology-themed actions are an attempt at courting the green vote.
“We’d prefer that he’d be in his office working on ending subsidies for the fossil fuel industries and tax breaks for trucking rather than doing electoral tourism on the Mont Blanc,” Greenpeace France climate campaigner Clement Senechal said.

If it wasn’t for Global Warming, France wouldn’t even exist. 12,000 years ago virtually all of the Northern Hemisphere was under a mile of ice.

All they have to do to save the glacier is start manufacturing ice and adding it to the mountain. Build and ice making factory near the glacier and start re-building the glacier. Problem solved.
Raise taxes to pay for it.

Whew! Glad we went and saw it in 1997 before it vanishes. Tried to visit the Matterhorn too but it was cloudy that day. Oh well. :-)
And what was the rate of shrinkage in the 19th century? The shrinking has sped up? Well, that's what happens when the surface area of the ice gets smaller.

You just know that guy’s not in a nice place, because every second he’s hitting himself in the head, distraught, crying “Why didn’t *I* think of that?”
Well, I’ll go further and say the melting of the great Northern Hemisphere glaciers proves it better.
Yesterday I sneezed. Three times. Normally it’s two. Global warming.
A melting glacier is not proof that man is causing it, however.
We're now due another ice age to keep Earth in its cyclical cycle.

Macron’s brain melting proves that Macron has had a meltdown.
If it’s “irrefutable”, then it’s also “unfalsifiable”, which means it isn’t science.
#5 good idea, they should only use electric power to power the ice making machines and front end loaders to scoop up the ice cubes...
I watched a new episode of NOVA and it was interesting showing the poles were once warm and had many animals lived there. Add in continental drift and the sun’s output and we now have the poles frozen. They even mention snowball earth where the entire earth was frozen over.
However.... they showed a chart that showed the warm and cold periods and we are according to this chart are in a glacier period and we should be colder now and it is MAN that is stopping this. They considered that a problem!
Now I figure what is wrong with being warm and not living in a frozen land under a mile or more of ice?
NOTHING! but the whole premise of the show was to show how man is the problem somehow and of course more taxes will solve everything.
