Democratic contest looks like catastrophic mess of 1972

This Democratic presidential nomination battle has the feel of the party’s disastrous 1972 contests that resulted in a 49-state landslide for Republican incumbent Richard Nixon over left-wing Sen. George McGovern of South Dakota.

That Democratic tussle, like this one, featured a multicandidate field navigating an uncertain and volatile Democratic electorate. Like this race, with socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders making the party establishment extremely nervous, the 1972 primaries pushed to the fore a candidate, McGovern, seen as so radical that party insiders appeared to be in full panic mode. And, as in this year with Joe Biden, in 1972, a former vice president, Hubert Humphrey, was seen as at least a co-favorite early on but couldn’t sustain any advantage.

In addition to McGovern and Humphrey, the 1972 Democratic war’s major contenders included Maine’s well-respected Sen. Edmund Muskie, former giant-slaying Sen. Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota (who effectively pushed President Lyndon Johnson out of the 1968 race), and Alabama Gov. George Wallace, making his third run for the presidency. Nobody was able to become a clear front-runner. Humphrey won five Rust Belt contests; Wallace won eight primaries (or state conventions), and tied for first in two others, and was on a major roll not even in non-Southern states before an assassination attempt left him paralyzed. Late-peaking Sen. Scoop Jackson of Washington state won seven contests; Muskie won five; and U.S. Rep. Shirley Chisholm of New York became the first black candidate to win contests with one outright win and two ties.

Nope. You're right about that. Millenials flocking to the polls to vote themselves student loan forgiveness will keep even the worst candidate competitive.

And George McGovern would seem sane and moderate compared to the people they’re running today.

That is a good comparison. Democrat voters have the desire for stability.

While they may not like Trump, they like his ‘results’ and the ‘Democrat crazies’ being pushed on them just don’t have more dignity, maturity or experience.

MAGA is working;0

It is not a mess at all, never mind a catastrophic one.

Bloomberg-Klobuchar is a very strong ticket, and it’s virtually a done deal after last night.

Bloomberg-Klobuchar is indeed their strongest ticket, but cannot beat Trump. The Bernie-Bots are not going to vote for Bloomberg.

And McGovern would seem sane and moderate compared to the people they're running today.

George McGovern was an honorable man that had a stellar military record having flown more than 25 missions in a B-24 during WWII. After his public service McGovern went into a private business where it is reported that he stated that had he known the affect of the interfering laws his Democrats passed towards business, he would have had a different attitude about lawmaking and business altogether.

Ain’t that the truth. The RINOs are going full gun today on Trump commenting on the Stone sentence recommendation. They don’t get it.

There are four scallawag attornyes whose names are known all across the country tonight. Many of us will remember them as traitors. The others will remember them as the world’s biggest fools snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. They had nailed Stone for whatever, and then in an exquisitely timed hold muh beer moment, overplayed their hands and brought world attention on themselves and their cabal - taking themselves out for lying to their superiors. Trump and Barr hardly had to lift a finger.

1968 is a _much_ better analogy—expects riots in Milwaukee this year.

That ticket cannot happen on the first ballot.

It could happen on a second ballot, but then the Bernie-bots and Antifa would go totally nuts for months.

We might want to consider going low key and encouraging the Democrats to stay on their current track. They’re doing just fine, and we’re really scared. ;)

I think there are at least 182 electoral votes which are safe for the Democratic candidate, no matter who is nominated...states like California, Illinois, New York, Maryland, and a few others which will never vote for Trump, not to mention the District of Criminals.

What if Sanders had another heart attack? This one fatal?

Nobody is going to question it much. The Bernie bots will be placated and support whomever the DNC puts up against Trump.

Just like Epstein supposedly tried to commit suicide before he succeeded....
