House Democrats question Secret Service on payments to Trump properties
The Hill ^ | 02 12 2020 | Cristina Marcos

Posted on 02/12/2020 12:50:28 PM PST by yesthatjallen

Members of the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Wednesday asked the Secret Service to disclose the scope of its payments to President Trump's company while protecting him as he spends time at his properties.

The request for documents and information came after The Washington Post reported last week that the Trump Organization has charged the Secret Service — and thereby taxpayers — for rooms used by agents at rates as high at $650 per night, despite claims that it only charges minimal fees.

In a letter to Secret Service Director James Murray, House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) asked for records of payments to Trump properties and any contracts between the Secret Service and the Trump Organization.

“The payment of rates far above government rates and the Trump Administration’s lack of transparency raise serious concerns about the use of taxpayer dollars and raise questions about government spending at other Trump properties,” Maloney and Speier wrote in the letter. “These concerns are heightened since President Trump has spent a third of his presidency at his private clubs and hotels, and his Treasury Secretary has attempted to shield Secret Service expenses from public scrutiny.”

The Washington Post writes another hit piece and we get another Democrat 'search and destroy' mission.

They never stop.

Yes, I distinctly remember that they built a guard house at their stately mansion in Chappaqua, and that they charge the SS rent for staying in it.

Trump’s next 4yrs are going to be an unending nightmare of investigations and baseless charges, and maybe another impeachment or two.

More harassment. Voters will hopefully send House Democrats out to pasture in November.

So Congress can get real work done.

As long as POTUS charges the same rate as John Q Public would pay, there’s nothing wrong or unethical about it. POTUS is not the sole owner of his properties as I understand it. His children are also shareholders, so he has an obligation to them. There is also the potential lost opportunity cost associated with having the Secret Service stay there rent free. Those are rooms that could potentially be rented to the public at the going rate if the Secret Service weren’t staying there, so the Trump corp. shouldn’t be expected to absorb that loss just because POTUS would rather stay at one of his own properties when traveling rather than somewhere else. And of course, POTUS has already forgone approx. 1.5 million in salary over the past 3 years.

Read the 5th Amendment. Read the 3rd. You could infer a payment due from either one. SS paid rent to Joe Biden for their shack on his Delaware property. Certainly Obama receives compensation on both his Vineyard and Kalorama properties.

I don’t know how the Trump organization handles pro bono rooms. But back in my productive years there were several times I received free rooms at a hotel. I did receive a charge for the room on my bill at check out, and then it was zeroed out. The charge went into a “write off” category, I suppose. I am not an accountant.

Biden made a fortune in charging rent to Secret Service at his home in Delaware. They “rented” some outbuildings.

The demoncRats have lost any ability to reason they ever had.

The SS will have to pay for a room wherever Trump stays. So what if it is on his property?

Do they think other places a President would stay would charge hundreds less per night for those rooms? Ah no!

What do they think the Trump organization should do, give those rooms out free and take a financial loss on them the whole time he is there with the SS in tow?

This is just childish.
