Coronavirus: Senior Chinese officials 'removed' as death toll hits 1,000

China has "removed" several senior officials over their handling of the coronavirus outbreak - as the death toll passed 1,000.

The party secretary for the Hubei Health Commission, and the head of the commission, were among those who lost their jobs.

They are the most senior officials to be demoted so far.

The deputy director of the local Red Cross was also removed for "dereliction of duty" over "handling of donations".

The two Hubei party officials will be replaced by a national figure - the deputy director of China's National Health Commission, Wang Hesheng.

As well as being removed from their posts, officials can also be punished by the ruling Communist Party.

For example, the deputy head of the Red Cross, Zhang Qin, was given "a serious intra-Party warning as well as a serious administrative demerit", state media said.

Earlier this month, the deputy head of the Wuhan bureau of statistics was removed, with similar sanctions for "violating relevant regulations to distribute face masks".

Why waste all those bullets. A single shot to the back of the head.

Must *really* be getting bad if they’re throwing people under the bus this early, with the crisis nowhere near its peak.

N95 Masks are only good for 4 hours and cannot be reused. So first a week’s supply to all Party officials, second a day’s supply to hospital workers, and any left overs go to well connected people. All ordinary dust masks will be distributed to party outlets and sold at a 20% markup or however much the local officials deem appropriate. Or something like that.

from the article:

” . . . the deputy head of the Red Cross, Zhang Qin, was given “a serious intra-Party warning as well as a serious administrative demerit”, state media said.”

And we don’t even know how many were put on double secret probation.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

I saw a study where N95 masks, under normal daily conditions (not dusty), and using them for a few hours a day, retain up to 90% of their effectiveness for 10 days.

The contamination of a virus on the outside of the masks is another matter. I bought some UV lights that will kill a virus in a matter of minutes. The fibers of the mask will also dry out the virus and inactivate it in an hour or so.

There are three answers to the N-95 mask ‘length’.

1. Under moderate sweat and perspiration, four hours is about right.

2. Under limited use (walking from your apartment to the grocery around the corner) and dry conditions, you can stretch it out for a couple of days. This includes no perspiration and no sweat conditions. Under extreme humid conditions, heavy perspiration...I have my doubts that it’d be effective more than an hour.

3. Then you come to the main issue....I think a lot of the N-95 masks you see in China....are fake. Some guy produced a whole bunch and marketed them at the right time, and they provide zero protection. I might be fearful that even on Amazon....the N-95 masks that you see....might be fake.

a serious intra-Party warning as well as a serious administrative demerit"

This vague but ominous sounding wording probably means something very specific in China, to those versed in the ways of the CCP.

The virus is exposing the soft underbelly of all Communist governments- corruption, incompetent corruption. Communist throughout history have all devolved into corrupt military run dictatorships, held together by jack booted armies, cowering the citizens into control. There can be no other outcome. Once free markets are destroyed, all the wealth flows into the government and corruption reigns supreme.

Remove senior officials.. Yup... That will stop this thing from spreading.... Why didn’t they do this earlier?

There’s a lot of deflection of blame towards local officials in the Party’s narrative. Except in China, top level local leaders are not local. In order to retain central control and prevent local leaders from cultivating power bases that might feed separatist tendencies in times of turmoil, senior officials are not only helicoptered in from other provinces, they are also rotated periodically in order to prevent them from going native. This is how the Chinese empire has been held together for thousands of years. The regimes change, but the methods remain the same. These “local” leaders will quite literally call a deer a horse, if told to do so by Xi Jinping.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhao_Gao#Calling_a_deer_a_horse

You can’t even call these “local” officials carpetbaggers, since carpetbaggers planned to set down roots. This history, of a vast empire insensitive to local problems, is possibly one of the reasons China has gone through many more successful internal revolts, led by peasants all the way up to top level courtiers, than just about any polity I can think of. The top level “local” officials, being short-timers and outsiders appointed by the central government more or less as hall monitors to ensure that any separatist tendencies are kept in check, are neither in place long enough to understand local issues nor particularly inclined to do much beyond ticket-punching and perhaps acquiring personal wealth through large scale graft. It’s a system with a built-in internal time bomb.

I hate being cynical. But do you really think Diane Feinstein and Michael Bloomberg and Warren Buffet aren’t getting preference on things like N95 masks? Does that say free markets don’t work or that we are just as corrupt as China?
