UC Berkeley removes racist John Boalt’s name from law school

UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall is no more, its name removed from the law school today (Thursday, Jan. 30), campus officials announced. The denaming — the outcome of a nearly three-year process launched after a Berkeley lecturer discovered the racist writings of John Henry Boalt, a 19th century Oakland attorney — is the first time a Berkeley facility’s name has been eliminated due to its namesake’s character or actions.

From the article:
We should be able to decide what legacies we should uphold and which ones we will not.

Thus, today's lawyers who are perhaps tomorrow's leaders learn to argue the Constitution is a living document. (/snort)

One could almost bet Janet Napolitano had a big role in the back story.

Does John Boalt get his money back, with interest? If I were an heir I would insist on it

Hmmm. If putting his name on the building was part of the grant deal, you have a point!

I don't think most great men in previous times bothered to put naming the building after them as a "quid pro quo." After all, who would do something so crazy as digging up dirt on your own benefactors, smearing the institution by denouncing them publicly, and trying to erase their names--while keeping the toys they brought you anyway? Only crazy people would do that.

I'd love it if the name was part of the deal. They'd be on the hook!

And yet the people who pull racist stuff against White’s today, are thought to be fine upstanding citizens.

I am so sick of the double standard that is now the flag of the Left.

Is affirmative action racist?

We’ll see how long Washington survives; as another FReeper pointed out, his face is on the flag of Washington state (as well as quarters, dollar bills).

Mao’s cultural revolutionaies and the Taliban were mere pikers compared to our leftists.

In many areas of life, we stand on the shoulders of the giants who came before us. Giant A-holes, in this case.

The assimilation of races, Boalt said in his speech, was needed for the “internal harmony essential to a nation’s property and perpetuity.” He cited five reasons why races might fail to assimilate: “physical peculiarities,” “intellectual differences and differences of temperament,” “differences in language and customs,” “hatred engendered by conquest or by clashing of national or race interests” and “religious fanaticism.”

These statements are common sense. The Left is at war with reality. At some point, reality will reassert itself.

Not just leftists. The Nikki Haley wing of the GOP does this too.

George Washington was one of the largest slaveholders of his time. The largest, according to some studies that I’ve seen.

The cultural Left has already begun demanding that pre-Civil War slave owners such as Andrew Jackson be expunged from American history, and have managed to get dimwits like Glenn Beck to join them. So successful has been their campaign to equate the Old South with Nazism.

GOP fools like Nikki Haley think that this condemnation of American history will stop where they want it to and not spread all the way back to America’s founding. It won’t stop. Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind. There will be future Presidents in the Obama mold who have nothing but contempt for America and its history. The next one may well wear the Republican label.

It’s hypocritical that in their precious wokeness they didn’t also return the money used to fund the law school.

I guess cancel culture is fine if and only if it doesn’t cost the proponents anything.

JD ‘89 from Boalt. I think they should keep the name, setting it in floor tiles at the front door. When people walk over his name whom he considered less worthy, they will have some satisfaction, and yet the history will be preserved.

In a ruling by the SCOTUS, it was found to be just that.

While it’s not the landmark case (and that may be open to interpretation) folks hoped it would be, it still put reverse discrimination on the map.

It still left support for racial quotas (or affirmative action) on the books.

They are going after Boalt now. What would the lefties think of a new speech by Pompeo:

“We can’t ignore China’s actions and strategic intentions,” he said while addressing the National Governors Association winter meeting. “The Chinese government has been methodical in the way it’s analyzed our system... it’s assessed our vulnerabilities and it’s decided to exploit our freedoms, to gain an advantage over us at the federal level, the state level and the local level.”

“Competition with China is happening. It’s happening in your state,” Pompeo added. “In fact, I’d be surprised if most of you in the audience had not been lobbied by the Chinese Communist Party directly.”

He said groups loyal to communist China are operating out in the open in Virginia, Minnesota, Florida and dozens of other states all around the country. Other Chinese groups, however, practice their nefarious actions in the shadows in an attempt to exercise influence over U.S. citizens and lawmakers.

Sounds raciss to me!!!!

“JD ‘89 from Boalt.”

Wow. Full respect. While at a student Cal in 1986-90 I met Boalt students for coffee at Cafe Strada, the place where law students frequented. Super bright students. I would say hi to John Noonan after mass on Sundays.

In 2010 as a teacher I helped many students prepare for LSAT and a student missed one question on the LSAT and failed to get accepted into Boalt. I told him, too bad. Yes, you needed a perfect LSAT to get into Boalt in 2010. I would say hi to John Noonan after mass on Sundays.

UC Berkeley has been invaded by brain-dead losers who practice affirmative action and crony capitalism. UC Berkeley Board of Trustees loose one million dollars a month, because the UC BOT practice poor investment strategies and ignore the wise counsel from the Haas School of Business. Sadly, Cal is an empty shadow of its former excellence.

John Searle taught philosophy at Cal for over 50 years and had a celebration. Sadly, he is not smart enough to realize that his lectures are painful, his books are confusing and his skills at delegating are weak.

Trump already asked when they’d come for Washington; we know its coming.
