Where Are All the Women CEOs? The traditional stepping stones to the chief executive position are jobs responsible for the bottom line—such as head of division—and those roles are still overwhelmingly filled by men.

Why, when women earn the majority of college degrees and make up roughly half the workforce, do so few occupy the chief executive job?

Women today lead 167 of the country’s top 3,000 companies. That’s more than double the share a decade ago, but still under 6%.

For many, the barrier isn’t only a glass ceiling at the very top, but also an invisible wall that sidelines them from the kinds of roles that have been traditional stepping stones to the CEO position.

A Wall Street Journal study of executives at the top companies, the biggest publicly traded firms by market value, shows that men on the way up overwhelmingly get the management jobs in which a company’s profits and losses hang in the balance. So-called line roles with profit-and-loss, or P&L, responsibilities, such as heading a division, unit or brand, are what set executives on the CEO track.

Women promoted into C-suites—the “chief” jobs in companies—on the other hand, often fill roles such as head of human resources, administration or legal, according to an analysis for the Journal by Equilar Inc., a research firm that collects data on executives and boards. Though important functions, the jobs don’t have profit-generating responsibility, and are rarely a path to running a company.

“You can have a seat at the table and not be a player,” said Jewelle Bickford, a partner at Evercore Wealth Management and co-chair of Paradigm for Parity, a coalition of business leaders aimed at closing the gender gap at the top of American companies. “The way you become a player, that usually comes with a P&L role.”

Over the past year, 307 companies in the Russell 3000 Index appointed new CEOs, according to Equilar. Only 26 of those were women—and 17 female CEOs stepped down or were ousted

There is no set quota of women CEOs that America needs.

Well, there’s Carly Fiorna who conned her board into letting her ruin HP, there’s Elizabeth Holmes who is going to trial for criminal fraud, and there’s a whole string of female CEOs who have wrecked companies from Yahoo to Best Buy.

I’m not saying there’s been any shortage of incompetent or crooked male CEOs - but when you put a person in a job because of their sex, this is what you get more often than not. There are lots of good CEOs and lots of bad ones, but which sex they are has nothing to do with it. And yes, there are only two sexes.

At the risk of sounding misogynistic , the level of drive, commitment, talent and energy to work your way up the ladder to CEO level is something rare that very few men are capable of and even fewer women have what it takes.

Thats just a statement of fact.

The answer is in the question.

It’s because women go for men with money, the more money the more the women go for them.

Creates a powerful incentive that few professional women have.

I’ve worked for a lot of women.

Never had a good experience. They don’t seem to know how to lead. They enjoy bossing people around. They seem to think that’s leadership. It isn’t.

You have to count the cost. I have several smart, talented college friends ... one is a C-level exec ... she’s been married 3x and only had one child.

I wonder if it was worth it.

This a million times over.

Could we all please stop this idiocy that insists that men and women are the same, and that half of all jobs should be held by women. Men and women are different; live with it!

....” very few men are capable of and even fewer women have what it takes....That’s just a statement of fact”....

Women have great difficulty emotionally when things don’t go their way as well. We recently saw this with Pelosi’s Tantrums and the Demorat Female Representatives on display in the House Chamber.

I’ve also found women want ‘credit attention’ whereas men find satisfaction in a project or effort accomplished well and effective.

It’s just a difference between men and women....and why they are both better at certain areas of life and business than the other.

There’s no “participation trophies” in the corporate big leagues. Gender, color, religion don’t mean shit. You either produce or you’re gone. I used to tell my managers, “You can have excuses or results. You can’t have both”

You’ve described most of the male bosses I’ve ever had, with the others being completely linguine spine by hiding and hoping everyone does their job enough not get noticed.

I’ve had one good male boss and the only great boss I’ve had was a woman. Yeah, I know it’s anecdotal and yeah I know it’s FR.
