Von Drehle, the Washington Posts most insightful liberal columnist in my view, is worried. He explains why in his latest column, perhaps the most perceptive Ive seen about the SOTU speech:
But no previous address so cunningly adapted the ancient ritual of a formal speech to the visceral medium of television. A former TV star himself, Trump understands that people dont just listen to what the president says. They also watch the reactions of the people in the room. He engineered the speech to force his opponents to react in potentially self-defeating ways.
Some examples. Rather than give the usual conservative lip service to school choice, Trump illustrated the issue by introducing a young African American girl in the gallery and announcing that she was getting a scholarship to attend her preferred school. What would House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her fellow Democrats do, applaud for the happy child and risk offending their public-school-teacher base or sit on their hands and look like a bunch of Scrooges?
Rather than deliver the Republican boilerplate on abortion, Trump introduced a pro-life mom and her 2-year-old daughter, who was born barely halfway to term. Advances in extreme neonatology kept her alive. How would Democrats react to this cute little darling whose existence blurs the distinction between life in and out of the womb?
Rather than poke the usual verbiage at the wing of the Democratic Party that embraces the label of democratic socialism, Trump introduced Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó, whose quest to unseat his countrys socialist government had the entire Congress on its bipartisan feet. Now Democrats are left to explain why ousting socialists is good policy for Venezuela while electing them the democratic variety, anyway is right for the United States.

The optics were negative:
Dems sitting on their hands at nearly every pro-American issue/remark/statement.
Example: We've killed 60 million unborn babies. [shrug] Who cares? Because, you know, choice is important. Well -- here is a happy mother and her precious daughter -- because, you know, life is a miracle.
Put a face on things. It's not just about sound bites for a Progressive utopia. It's real people, fighting the good fight day after day. When you see it that way, it's hard to see the Left as anything but cold and heartless. Like Stalin.
Giving meaning to the term L O L
What an awesome quote!
Sounds like being seen as the losers they are is beginning to suck for some Drats with above-room-temperature IQs...
Yep. And don’t forget the Tuskeegee Airman and his future Astronaut great grandson.
And this is how the Dems came across: they hate the old black man, they hate the little black kids (who were ADORABLE btw, esp. that little girl in her big glasses, she just looked like an excellent student), they hate the little baby, and they hate the baby’s mom!
Exactly, the man whose brother was murdered by the illegal said that for ALL the guests it was like Pelosi “ripped their hearts out”.
If the American voters don’t demolish the Dems in November something is wrong with this country!
Democrats will vote for a communist to beat Trump...go figure..
Think about this...
Sanders gets the nomination...the stock market crashes before November and then he wins..????????/
Paul Mirengoff, no thanks. I quit reading Powerline about 6 months ago because of his Never-Trump posts.
I really don’t mind Sanders so much as the rest of them. He is what he is, and he’s not a crook and he’s not a phony. Of course he would be a thousand disasters as President, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen. The only one who makes me a bit nervous is Bloomberg, because he plays that fake “competence”card. But he’s quite reptilian and repulsive, so there’s that.
People vote their pocketbooks. And quite frankly I keep hearing (including from a caller to the Julie Mason show on Sirius POTUS channel) that Black people are “pragmatic” voters. That is to say they like to vote for a winner.
If it’s this cadre of rich white liberal idiots v. Trump, I think pragmatic black voters may flock to The Donald.
And that, my FRiend will lead to heads exploding in all the liberal areas of the land. There might only be a few people with heads left on in NY, LA, Chitown!
I agree this was his goal, although I thought it was obvious what he was doing. They’re so predictable because they can’t help themselves due to pure hatred in their hearts.
He set them up and they reacted exactly as anticipated. I was laughing the whole time.
Anyone running against the Democrats in that room Tuesday, will be able to make some great videos demonstrating why they should all be voted out of office.
Trump was an actor... but also DIRECTOR and PRODUCER. He studied the television medium and mastered it from all angles.
He's producing, acting, and directing quite literally, The Greatest Show on Earth!
He may not be a phony, but Sanders is a crook.
And his wife is a crook. Ask Burlington College or what used to be Burlington College.
He has become a millionaire on our dime. He has never had a real job and got kicked out of his own commune. He has no answers other than taking our money.
He is P.T. Barnum except that those who got taken by Barnum knew they were a sucker.
Trump was at the top of the reality ratings for 14 years......not easy to do.
I think Ben Shapiro’s analysis is the best I’ve heard... He boiled them slowly so they didn’t know what was happening to them... He started off with non-political issues such as low unemployment and higher wages and got the dimocrats to sit on their hands. Then, when he got to the more political issues with great guests, they had no choice but to keep sitting.
WIN BIGLY by Scott Adams
This thread certainly deserves the ‘Best Thread Ever’ award (in my humble opinion). Thanks to all who contributed, especially to the link to President Trump’s Twitter post.
All part of a 3D chess game....he’s a Master Player - and proved it again with yesterdays, “celebration” get together and talk....
