UPDATE - Canadian Flight - delayed 24 hours - weather delayed plane getting into Hanoi staging area by 4hrs and CCP wouldn’t allow the flight to proceed during daylight hrs.

New instructions: arrive no later than 5pm Feb 6 for early early morning flight on Feb 7. Those already in route contact embassy (or camp at the airport I guess? seems more logical than playing ground-hog day? )

CDC: Today the test kits will start shipping to the over 100 US public health labs, each of these labs is required to perform international verification for CLIAA compliance prior to reporting out. This process is expected to take a few days. Initially 200 test kits will be distributed to US domestic laboratories and another 200 will be distributed to selected international laboratories. Each test kit can perform 700 to 800 patient samples. What that means is that by the start of next week, we expect there to be much enhanced capacity for laboratory testing closer to our patients.

Single Mutation Could Significantly Enhance Wuhan Coronavirus

Decade-long structural studies by Fang Li of the University of Minnesota, et al. have shown how the SARS virus (SARS-CoV) interacts with animal and human hosts in order to infect them.

“Alarmingly, our data predict that a single mutation [at a specific spot in the genome] could significantly enhance [the Wuhan coronavirus’s] ability to bind with human ACE2,” the investigators write. For this reason, Wuhan coronavirus evolution in patients should be closely monitored for the emergence of novel mutations at the 501 position in its genome, and to a lesser extent, the 494 position, in order to predict the possibility of a more serious outbreak than has been seen so far.{emphasis mine.}
