Article from 1958: The Coming Ice Age -A true scientific detective story
Harper's Magazine Archives ^ | 1958 | Betty Friedan

Posted on 02/03/2020 6:46:04 PM PST by FreedomNotSafety

How a rising of the ocean waters may flood most of our port cities within the foreseeable future — and why it will be followed by the growth of a vast glacier which may eventually cover much of Europe and North America.

It is this melting of Arctic ice which Ewing and Donn believe will set off another Ice Age on earth. They predict that it will cause great snows to fall in the north — perennial unmelting snows which the world has not seen since the last Ice Age thousands of years ago. These snows will make the Arctic glaciers grow again, until their towering height forces them forward. The advance south will be slow, but if it follows the route of previous ice ages, it will encase in ice large parts of North America and Europe. It would, of course, take many centuries for that wall of ice to reach New York and Chicago, London and Paris. But its coming is an inevitable consequence of the cycle which Ewing and Donn believe is now taking place.

In several thousand years a two-mile ice sheet may cover the United States and Europe. If man finds no way to switch the glacial thermostat, there may well be a real estate boom in the Sahara.

Not fake news but old news. Amazingly relevant to today's climate nonsense.

Sorry if this misleads you into thinking it was a current article.

By Betty Friedan? Looks like the original Feminazi was quite a Renaissance woman.

It’s amazing or should I say disgusting that people think that humankind can control the weather or any other natural process like stopping or saving glaciers. It is a mockery of God at most and complete ignorance of the minute power we have at the least. Total arrogance and pathological egotism.

These scientists may have been wrong in their conclusions, I could not begin to critique what they say, but not once do they even hint that this is anything but an unstoppable natural cycle.

Except right at the end but I think that was in jest because in 1958 people were still sane enough to believe that man could not control Earth’s climate. the reader’s would have seen the jest immediately. Reading it today one might assume that we need to set the Earth’s thermostat.

The next Ice Age will come, we just don’t know when.

This interglacial period is already longer than most.

When it comes, there isn’t anything humans can do about it but adapt.

In 1979, my Dad went to a lecture about how sunspot cycles were going to make temps much cooler around 2020. Cooler summers with mild rainy winters.

I used to have the tape of the lecture. Would listen to it on occasion in memory that day with my Dad.

Iben Browning I think.

Still remember when it went to global warming.

Where were the child-savants in those days? Maybe there were no Gretas back then and that’s the reason why things are such a mess today. If ONLY Greta’s grandpa had pursued this, we might have been saved.

Watching the scroll on Fox News about the most important issue for Iowa dem caucus participants, jobs/economy 11%, climate change 31%. They’ve lost their minds.

And for years I thought the biggest earth shattering events of 1958 were the major redesign of the Chevy, and the rest of the GM lines

As well as the Dodgers and Giants moving out of NYC.

We had just finishing the International Geophysical Year, where we were thinking by using actual physical measurements! Not mesmerized by computer simulation where the model is better then reality.

To be fair making physical measurements is hard, time consuming, expensive & sometimes dangerous, much better to code up a model then go to Starbucks & discuss the output.

EARTH TO COOL DOWN WARNS GEO SCIENTIST

2007 The US MAT.Com

Scientific reports from Canada and Greenland has indicated that the the shrinking arctic ice sheets have begun to replace themselves rapidly. Strongly suggesting the earth instead of warming, is beginning to cool down. It is still not known (or proven) if this is the result because of the reduced rate of sun spot activity.

Canadian geo scientist Professor R. Timothy Patterson of Carelton University is urging a go-slow on the rush for governments to “Play God” with global warming legislative blaming this on CO2 (carbon dioxide) discharges. Legislating corrections attempting to control a natural cyclic occurrence caused by; sun spots, the magnetic solar wind, and cyclic earth magnetic polarity reversal, among other natural occurrences including volcanism, meteors etc. Probably plays a very significant role in climate change. Yet ignorantly blaming man made CO2 emissions for climatic change. which is becoming a rapidly discredited and minuscule cause of global warming in his article published by Canada’s Financial Post. 6/20/07

Patterson was selected by the Canadian government to study the fluctuations in certain types of fish populations.
While doing so the Canadian Geo-Scientist found a correlation when certain species of fish had high population and then drastic drop offs. He discovered these fluctuations corresponded with sun spot activity and solar radiation vs cosmic activity. When earth cooling occurred.

Studying deep fjords along the Western Canadian coast where deep pools of low oxidation water exist. The Patterson study reached deep into the earths recent past of 4000 years of undisturbed sediments. Patterson found that when aquatic activity was highest and lowest in those collected sediments having high aquatic content had matched known solar protection when the magnetic wind was highest, and dropped off when earth magnetic fields activities were lowest. Thus causing cosmic radiation to intensify.

Then because the earth became unprotected by its magnetic fields from galactic cosmic activity. Patterson cites several accepted theories which concludes this then created cloud activity during such periods which increased drastically. Thus cooling earth and bringing in its ice ages.

In his presentation here is a professor urging more scientific study (like Pope Benedict)is needed. That politicians including Al Gore, of The Earth Is Flat Society, don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. Strongly suggesting that the global warming may be caused by exhaling politicos rather than serious scientific examination.

Patterson seems to be saying before Canadians start investing in palm trees they should be considering better parkas because what goes up must come down and the Mexicans better move over for a reverse population flow. The story was featured in The Drudge Report, and World Net Daily, which were linked in The US Mat’s last page. But lost due to source link changes . http://www.theusmat.com/index.htm

A theoretical method to slow glaciation has been around for a long time, to sprinkle soot on top of the glacier, then again after a major snowfall. It likely won’t reduce the glacier, or even maintain its current size, but it may slow its rate of growth.

There is also the possibility that a solar minimum, by itself, might not be enough, that it needs something like a major volcanic eruption to jump start the cooling process.

Climate change is important to the left because it is an excuse to regulate virtually everything - every last detail of your life. And thus impose communism to “save the earth.”

Hurray, a REAL magazine article about global cooling, not just the usual fake Time Magazine cover that that shows a penguin standing on snow above the headline “How to Survive the Coming Ice Age.”
