This is an important clarification. The fear was that it took up to two weeks for infected people to show symptoms but they could infect others while showing no signs of the virus. This would have probably made containment impossible because we wouldn’t know who to test or quarantine.

For people with symptoms — flu or cold that could lead to pneumonia — I am not sure what the official guidance is as far as how severe the symptoms should be before going to a doctor or hospital to get tested.

I would guess people with symptoms should stay home and isolate themselves from the public (and wear a mask if they must leave their home) and they should isolate themselves from family members within their homes.

-stay home from work -order groceries and other essentials online -stay in an area within your home separated from others -family members should avoid close proximity and wear masks when in close proximity and wash their hands with soap and hot water afterwards.

This might be an overreaction, but seems like common sense. We can help each other by limiting the spread of a virus that could potentially kill 2% of us.

Masks are sold out. Are there alternatives? How bad is it to interact, without masks, with people who are (unknowingly) infected? Or should people go in and get checked at the very least sign of a fever, coughs or sniffles?

In the early days of diseases like this, you need to read up as much as you want, but keep your mind open on just about every aspect of it.

Observations and characteristics seem pretty sound at times. The only thing is, they frequently aren’t.

Several days ago it was a known fact that symptoms didn’t have to be present, to transmit the disease. Wrong.

Let that be a lesson to us across the board.

People in positions that should lend the credibility, are as capable (and perhaps more so) of making some very misleading and sensational comments.

It will all pretty much make sense in the end.

Early on, it was pointed out that a doctor, who had NOT been to Wuhan, caught coronavirus, from sitting at a conference, next to a doctor who HAD been in Wuhan.

It has been shown that the virus is transmissible via the mucous membranes in the eyes; and that it is shed in feces.

What a lifetime crock of sh*t. Word has gone out from the powers-that-be to suppress the truth.

Currently, my attitude is that should it get so bad I need to wear a mask when I leave home, I’m not going out.

At home, you do the best you can, but you do live in the same house and with all of the contact possibilities, I think a mask becomes superfluous.

There is no clear guidance on what to do if you start to get symptoms.

Simple advice from the authorities can significantly limit the spread of the virus in the United States:

How severe should the flu or cold symptoms be before we go in to get checked?

How helpful are masks and safety glasses when interacting with someone with minimal symptoms?

They could limit the spread of a virus that could *potentially* kill tens of millions of people in this country by giving out simple, straightforward advice but they aren’t doing it.

But most viruses spread when asymptomatic. That is not shocking though most people don’t understand that. I wouldn’t count on information now until some more weeks have passed.

So the outspoken Canadian doctor was right (maybe - I’m not convinced either way yet).

Many infected people have passed the virus to others without having symptoms, because the infection often, if not always, starts and ends in the lower lungs. At least 2-3 days before and 2-3 days after symptoms.

And no, I don’t have a link. Been through at least hundreds of articles and will not catalog them.

The problem is, people lie for very selfish reasons with no thought of the consequences for others.

Sometimes what we do can be a matter of life and death for others.

When my kids were very little (some 25 years ago), during VBS one year, one mother brought in her little boy and dropped him off in the nursery while he was sick.

I don’t remember the timeline but someone noticed he felt hot and the mother admitted that he was sick when she brought him.

In any event, EVERY kid who was in the nursery, plus their siblings later on, came down with it.

When I think of the illness those families had to endure and the medical bills for doctor visits and medicines that we all had to shell out because of one thoughtless, RUDE, selfish woman, it still makes my blood boil.

It was also a very eye opening experience as to how fast something can spread and how ONE sick person can infect so many.

Possible much needed good news!

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Not sure if this can be 100% established yet but I do believe those 2% fatalities are the very young, those with compromised immune systems, including those over 65, and of course, the elderly in general because many were smokers and some still are. What kills a person who gets this virus is pneumonia when it settles in the lower lungs. Smokers and ex-smokers have compromised lung function. I’m at ex-smoker myself.

It’s not an automatic death sentence for those at risk. Quick and correct treatment can fight this with a patient willing to their part by fighting hard as well.

The common yearly flu kills 80k people a year. This is just a stronger flu than we normally get.
