WA lawmaker looks to break ground on universal basic income

A lawmaker in Olympia has a proposal on the table that would act as an entryway into universal basic income in Washington state.

Democratic Rep. Joe Nguyen’s bill would provide $500 a month for two years to qualifying people already using state welfare programs. During a pilot period, it would be limited to 500 randomly selected people from that pool of eligible applicants.

The goal: Provide a testing ground for universal basic income.

“For two years, [let’s] study how this would impact individuals in Washington state who already rely on services that they qualify for, and then see if through this experience, they’re able to become more stable, and have a higher rate of moving off social services,” Nguyen told KIRO Radio’s Dave Ross.

So it’s welfare. Even the proponents of UBI can’t get it right.

A person can receive housing, medical, utilities, & food “benefits” equivalent to more than $50K, plus $6K in cash— and pay not one dime in taxes on that $56K income, not to mention whatever income not reported on non-existent pay stubs
Meanwhile, schmucks who clock in every day will fork over at least $10K on that same $56K income.

Yup. Fails miserably wherever tried. People getting $LivingWage/month for free have zero incentive to step their productivity up from $0 to $MinWage. Big gap between doing nothing (and not worrying about $1k/mo cost of necessities) and actually having to get up & _work_, _on_time_, doing something boring (it’s a commodity job for a reason) even just 4 hours per day 3x a week (totaling a paltry $87, about $400/month). Huge psychological barrier, making the leap from “eat/sleep/mate” 24/7 to having to actually _work_ for not much more benefit.

Socialism works ... until you run out of other people’s money.
At that point, they just move on to communism.

(That’s why Bernie is completely unphased by questions about “how will you pay for this?” He’s OK with just taking over everyone’s $ by force.)

The flip-side of universal Healthcare, Housing, Income, fill-in-the-bank has always been,

“You’re not worth what you’re costing us. Just swallow the damned pill!”

Yes. Finland. Total failure. That never stops these fools. The pernicious influence of welfare schemes is so well documented that anyone who promotes such schemes should be labelled as evil.

they should also be labelled as mentally ill- the definition of insanity is trying the same failing thing over and over again thinking it will end in different results

They should be institutionalized

UBI is a utopian fantasy even if it is done "properly". However the main problem is that the proposals for UBI are never 'U' and seldom 'B'.

Everyone must get sufficient income to pay for the basics: food, shelter, clothing, and medical.

If the money isn't given to everyone and isn't distributed in a sufficient manner then it is just another welfare program.

And, perhaps...

Progressives think they can outsmart “supply and demand”. They can’t.
They don’t realize that money itself is a commodity subject to that economic law.

Tuition is skyrocketing because gov’t is making money easy to get; high supply of tuition $ leads to a high demand for $ in exchange for education.

Housing is skyrocketing because gov’t is making money easy to get; high supply of mortgage $ leads to a high demand for $ in exchange for housing.

Essentials WILL skyrocket because UBI will make money easy to get; high supply of basic income $ will lead to a high demand for $ in exchange for essentials.
Funny thing is, this is already happening via the pervasive welfare state; UBI will just make it worse by making it even easier (vs fighting bureaucracy) to acquire “basic income”.

Somehow Progressives don’t grasp such a basic concept.
They don’t understand that forcibly moving $ from one place to another affects its supply & demand, with what should be obvious consequences.
