Italy most likely member to quit the EU and demand independence after Brexit -shock poll

A BREXIT Day poll conducted by Express.co.uk has found that Italy is the favourite to follow the UK out of the European Union after Britain leaves at 11pm tonight.

More than 7,000 readers had their say in the ballot on the final day of the UK’s membership of the bloc as voters across the country prepared to mark the momentous occasion. Boris Johnson will address the nation at 10pm while Nigel Farage will lead a Brexit bash outside Parliament to help Britons ring in the new era in style. Express.co.uk readers have said the Italians are most likely to next want out of the “corrupt club” of the EU, with Poland another high contender to demand an exit.

When asked, “Which country will quit the EU next?” readers were given a choice to vote for one of 12 members of the bloc or another country, which they were told to specify in the comments section of the page.

Of the 7,076 people who took part, 1,939 (28 percent) said Italy, 1,179 (17 percent) said Poland and 854 (13 percent) said the Netherlands.

The fourth-most likely country to vote Leave in an EU referendum is Hungary (691 votes) ahead of Denmark (670 votes), according to the poll.

The poll ran from 10am to 7pm on Friday, January 31.

One Express.co.uk reader joked: “It would be better just to ask which country would be the last to leave?”

And another quipped: “Will the last one to leave be sure to turn the lights off!”

Another said: “And yet another said: “Italy for sure. The country is totally ruined by the EU.

“They need to get out of the Eurozone one way or another and quit the corrupt club.

“I pitied the poor Italians. My heart is with them.”

Greece will be at the front of the queue to quit due to it being “treated abominably” by Brussels, according to one reader.

And another person predicted Brexit would be followed by a “race to get out” among member states.

They added: “The elephant in the room is Germany. They also have the option to bring back the Deutschmark - Merkel has hinted at it.”

One person likened the behaviour of members of the union to pieces in a game of dominoes.

“Once the first topples, all the rest crash,” they said. “It’s just a case of who and when.”

But others argued that Brexit may be a once-off event the EU has had to deal with.

They predicted the bloc would continue to “roll along quite happily without us “ and said “as long as Germany continue to bankroll the community it will survive”.

Another said all members states were united in their dissatisfaction at having to watch the shots being called by “the Germans and their French poodle”.

Another predicted a change in leadership in Paris, on the back of the yellow vest protests, would lead to the counter being led out of the bloc.

They said: “France is ready to fall. Le Pen will take the presidency following the current ‘disturbances’.

“She will lead France out. Italy, Spain and Greece will quickly follow - before a huge rush of smaller nations leave.

“The EU was always destined to fail. It shall do so within the next decade.”

Italy is dying to put the nationalist Salvini back in power. But I believe he said they are staying in the EU.

Italy refuses to live within its means.

It will never leave unless the EU cuts it’s losses and kicks it out.

Yea but I figure they may have a better sense of the continental sentiments of the average Joe, better than us. They’ve never been locked in on their island and take vacations on the Med quite frequently.

Italy already allowed the EUSSR to pick its prime minister, more than once if I recall. And they were one of the original signatories to the Treaty of Paris, which created the European Coal and Steel Community, the first version of the EU; they’re part of the so-called “hard core” of this empire and will not leave.

How are the rest of the PIGS doing in the EU?

PIGS = Portugal, Italy, Greece & Spain

Greece used to be the most financially irresponsible of the four.
