The United Nations World Health Organization on Jan. 9 announced an outbreak of a newor novelcoronavirus (2019-nCoV) in Wuhan, China.
In the three weeks since the announcement, the virus has intensified in China, infecting thousands there and is now spreading across the globe, far beyond its origin in Hubei province.
Indeed, this new coronavirus has taken nearly 200 lives in China.
As Chinese public health officials strive to contain the virus, its important to identify three early lessons that can be drawn from the outbreak and the initial response to it to prevent this Chinese epidemicand others that will undoubtedly followfrom becoming a pandemic in our highly mobile, interconnected world.
1. Chinas wild- and exotic-game markets must be shut downfor good.
In China, wild and exotic game is found in so-called wet marketsa common food outlet in the country. At these markets, its not uncommon for merchants to sell a variety of wild and exotic animals, both dead or alive, for human consumption and perceived medicinal benefits.
In 2002, a viral cousin of the 2019-nCoV called SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) surfaced in China, killing nearly 800 people and affecting 26 countries.
In 2017, researchers determined that the virus originated with bats, which are coronavirus carriers, and was transmitted to civet cats, which were then sold at a wet market in Chinas Guangdong province.
The virus then passed from those animals to human victims.
Trade in all wild game was reportedly banned in China in 2003 after the SARS epidemic, but restrictions on some animals were loosened over time. Its not clear how rigorously regulations were enforced.
Consequently, while the exact transmission path of this outbreak is being investigated, the presence of these wild- and exotic-animal markets very likely poses a significant threat to public health in China and beyond.

Look at how HIV works.
It destroys the antibodies. It opens up the body to secondary infection. HIV is also VERY slow moving, enough that some researchers are wondering if it causes AIDS at all.
This corona is not acting like that. It is attacking the lung and acting like a very aggressive virus like the cold.
You mis-characterized my post. Nice try.
1. They still aren’t sure where the disease started. Closing down shops that may not have been the point of ground zero, is not warranted on the merits. Many folks who contracted the disease had not gone to the shops. Further, some folks had the disease before the supposed seminal event at those markets. No action warranted.
2. Health organizations were aware of a Coronavirus outbreak in the early to mid part of December. As of January 20th, there were only 278 reported cases, and Johns Hopkins University was aware of it. The world wide health community has been advised of many places of infection inside China. That’s hardly the actions of a nation clamping down on information. I would term this, probably could have done better, but not a total wash out.
3. If the UN demanded access to our nation to oversee our efforts to combat a situation like this, would you want them coming in to look over our shoulder?
A sovereign nation has the right to handle their emergency as they see fit.
I still believe this is the most egregious error China has made, because more eyes on the problem, the more chances there are to combat it.
So I will go along on this one.
"As the coronavirus spreads, fear is fueling racism and xenophobia"
LOL! Never let a virus go to waste.
Besides, the girl in that pic is kinda cute.
Hey, what about all the people who have EGADS, Egregious General Anxiety Disorder Syndrome.
Very, but don't even think about it. She's appears to be in a "DO NOT ENTER" area.
Ah, but Grasshopper, she is *leaving* that area.
Ok then. Be kind, respectful, courteous to the girls, ladies, women, moms, nieces, aunties, grandmas, females.
I know you would. : ) You’re a FReeper.
There, is that better?
Winnie the Flu.
That caused a raised eyebrow.

...this new coronavirus has taken nearly 200 lives in China.
Golly! in the same time; CHOICE has taken about 66,000 lives here in the good, ol’ USofA!!!
These facts alone should scare the HELL out of you!!
(If you’re a FETUS; that is...)
You think the Chinese monitor FreeRepublic? Yikes... that would be horrible.
anyone know the Chinese symbol for F.O.A.D.? I will be more than happy to post it continuously so that the Chinese know without any doubt what I think. LOL
I mean seriously every year it seems they have to kill half their pigs or chickens because of diseases. These people never learn. Now it’s just the natural progression of it all.
The Chinese have been monitoring FR since at least the 80s.
Possibility that HIV virus is in Corona virus, intentional, man made

I wonder what percentage WE kill; just to EAT them?
: ) It is.
