Abstract We are currently witnessing a major epidemic caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019- nCoV). The evolution of 2019-nCoV remains elusive. We found 4 insertions in the spike glycoprotein (S) which are unique to the 2019-nCoV and are not present in other coronaviruses. Importantly, amino acid residues in all the 4 inserts have identity or similarity to those in the HIV-1 gp120 or HIV-1 Gag. Interestingly, despite the inserts being discontinuous on the primary amino acid sequence, 3D-modelling of the 2019-nCoV suggests that they converge to constitute the receptor binding site. The finding of 4 unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV, all of which have identity /similarity to amino acid residues in key structural proteins of HIV-1 is unlikely to be fortuitous in nature. This work provides yet unknown insights on 2019-nCoV and sheds light on the evolution and pathogenicity of this virus with important implications for diagnosis of this virus

What on Earth was going on in that lab in Wuhan?
“....unlikely to be fortuitous in nature.”
Pretty much makes it clear what their thinking is on the subject.
A version of HIV that spreads like flu would be really bad news for the human race.
If China let out a weaponized flu like that, it’s an act of war against the whole world.
Yes,If this sequencing is correct, this is indeed weaponized spaghetti.
“...key structural proteins of HIV-1 is unlikely to be fortuitous in nature.”
Man made - lab made - not natural...

If so there’s no way they would admit that. Would be very difficult to prove.
An elegant way to say it.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
*PING*
It certainly appears that may be the case. Time will tell I guess.
the PDF is surprisingly readable. and scary.
What Is the Function of Spikes on a Virus?
Spikes made of the glycoprotein hemagglutinin, or H spikes, enable viruses to latch onto their host cells, while N spikes, those made of the glycoprotein neuraminidase, enable viruses to escape their host cells upon reaching maturity. These spikes are found on enveloped viruses. One virus that possesses both H spikes and N spikes is the influenza virus, which exists in Type A, B and C forms based on the different protein and nucleic acid makeup of the virus.
From Answers.com: Spikes are proteins that are part of the viral capsid/envelope (depending on if the virus is a naked virus or not). It helps with attachment to the host cell. They are derived from their host cell's own proteins (but are not the same as their hosts), and can help in evading the host cell's defenses.
Generic coronavirus for illustration below (not 2019-nCoV).
That big bio- weapons lab at the infection epicenter has been critiqued for inadequate safety containment - it will be most interesting indeed if this virus didnt naturally arise report is further confirmed
Indeed.
HOW DID THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT KNOW THAT TAKING HIV DRUGS WOULD BE EFFECTIVE AGAINST THE CORONAVIRUS BEFORE THIS PAPER WAS PUBLISHED?
Sunday, January 26
(Reuters) - China is testing an HIV drug as a treatment for symptoms of the new coronavirus that is rapidly spreading, said drugmaker AbbVie Inc on Sunday.
China health authorities requested the drug to help with the governments efforts to address the crisis, according to Adelle Infante, a spokeswoman for North Chicago, Illinois-based AbbVie.

I guess this site publishes anything. As they note, the articles are not reviewed.
I’ve seen worse articles.
Still, this was ludicrous and non-rigorous.
The very short sequences that match very short HIV sequences also match 100’s of other sequences in all sorts of organisms.
One theory floating around the net is that a ChiCom mole in a bio-weapons lab in Canada stole a sample and it was mishandled in Wuhan and escaped.
