Number of confirmed cases jumps by almost 2,000 in one day, as total figure tops 9,600 in China

From CNN's Steven Jiang in Beijing

China's National Health Commission has announced that as of the end-of Thursday January 30, the total number of confirmed Wuhan coronavirus cases in mainland China had risen to 9,692.

That's a jump of 1,982 from the previous day, with the total figure now far exceeding the number of cases associated with severe respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003 -- previously among Asia's worst outbreaks.

The death toll in mainland China has now reached 213, with 42 new deaths occurring in Hubei province -- the epicenter of the outbreak, and one in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang.

Death toll rises to 213

The death toll from the Wuhan coronavirus has risen in mainland China after more deaths were reported in the central province of Hubei.

Hubei’s health authority said that 42 additional deaths were reported Thursday, bringing the death toll in the epicenter of the Wuhan coronavirus to 204.

This brings the total number of deaths in mainland China to 213.

It’s odd that the stock market doesn’t seem to care what happens in China

dow was down 200 then finished up 100 plus

Oil is up and gold is down tonight.

I think the feeling is that it will be contained in other countries.

That’s far from a given yet.

On a lighter note more than 200 people died by ricksaw accidents this week.

Still a small statistical universe, but the numbers are troubling.

Mortality rate holding around 2.2%, confirmed cases still growing exponentially. Eventually the number of cases will start to level off. Hopefully the mortality rate drops as the most vulnerable succumb. :( But we won’t know the real numbers for a week or two.

Then why are the Chicoms taking draconian measures? Is it possible that the numbers are actually higher?

These are only the “tested with the special kit and confirmed” cases. They’re just relative numbers that indicate that a huge number of those they do test are positive and that the number is still growing overall.

The really crazy numbers are the ones that don’t get air time:

https://bnonews.com/index.php/2020/01/the-latest-coronavirus-cases/

The 15,200 “suspected” cases.
The 1500 with “serious” illness.
The over 300 in “critical” condition.

And remember, these are nothing more or less than what the Chinese government is willing to publish. Almost everyone is assuming the reality could easily be 10x higher. No, no one KNOWS yet... but it’s looking likely. The sheer number of cases popping up around the world indicate how widespread it was as far back as the 13th of this month.

Still watching. This is some impressive suppression of info considering how few videos and how few reports are coming out of over a dozen quarantined cities with a total population of over 50 million.

“Mortality rate holding around 2.2%”

...According to the Chicoms.

You don’t lockdown 54 million over “200” deaths and a case of the sniffles.

The press has no idea if this will be big or little..they just want to start a panic...

36 000
The CDC website states what has become commonly accepted and widely reported in the lay and scientific press: annually “about 36 000 [Americans] die from flu” (www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease.htm) and “influenza/pneumonia” is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States (www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/lcod.htm).

Yeah. But they’re getting a lot of practice in a mass control drill on their population.

This thing will beat SARS (774) in deaths in 2 weeks, and that's IF the deaths stay at just around 40 a day. This thing already has more cases than SARS through its entire run.

I believe the numbers may be somewhat under reported, but the central committee has come down very hard on any shenanigans on reporting. It has opened a special channel (phone number) for people to report any incidents where that may be the case.

I see no way that this thing can be contained in China, other nations may have a chance at stopping it, but that's even doubtful.

When the Chinese medical system becomes overwhelmed the death rate will rocket up like we saw with SARS and we can expect the rate to triple as it did with SARS, which means we can expect to see a 6-7.5% death rate. If we run with with Spanish Influenza as a base line and assume a 50% infection rate and a 6% death rate we can be looking at 45 million dead in China alone.

This has the ability to get really nasty really fast.

This is the time to pray that China gets it under control

I don’t see any inclusion of that Italian cruise ship that is on lock down with 6,000 passengers.

The flu in the U.S. infects 15% of inoculated adults.

Why would this virus be much different? Because the flu has already saturated the population from the previous flu season?

I am in Vietnam. I was just in America to visit family and do my taxes.

When I left America, NOBODY was wearing masks. Nobody.

When I got to Chicago, I saw some Asians in the airport, with masks. A few.

When I got on the plane, there were some people with masks. Some.

When I got to Asia, I still saw a lot of people without masks, but a lot with.

On the last flight there were a lot of masks. More than half.

When I got here to Ho Chi Minh, EVERYBODY was wearing masks. At every desk. Everyone.

The taxi driver. Everyone.

Not sure what will happen here with regard to progression, but I was glad to make it here, before the borders possibly start being impacted.

Stay aware. People you might want to locate some masks, because they will become VERY difficult to find there in the US soon.

Maybe also, think of getting a pair of goggles.

Not trying to over-react, but just pay attention.
