Excellent summary.

I would only differ on the incubation period: Best guess now is 5.2 days, I believe, tho' there does appear to be a LOT of variability - up to 14 days? - which is another confounding factor for sure.

"gigantic hits to the world economy" would kill a lot of people too, maybe start a war or two somewhere, maybe even create conditions for this or some other outbreak to go uncontrollable in most of the world.

"difficult" -- and then some...

Possibly car of third generation transmission, depending on which man the child is infected from?

There is a lot of comparison to influenza out there. I did it myself, and I am tracking it using flu stats. (I worked in this field in a hospital and I am a data nerd.)

The problem is that this is NOT the flu. The only thing they have in common is that they are viruses. That is akin to saying a Ford Mustang and a Yugo are similar—they are both cars.

I think that you are correct in keeping it in perspective. My ONLY reason for keeping an eye on this is the “actions” that the Chinese are taking to prevent the spread. They ARE unprecedented moves impacting millions of people. And based on their history of not reporting accurate numbers for anything, I am skeptical.

So yes, there is no need to panic. Yes, you should be taking flu precautions—as you should every flu seasons. No, you should probably not be buying face masks off of ebay.

And ...any suggestions of World War Z are premature. There have no confirmed cases of the dead reanimating. LOL.

Here is a question...

Is this an act of God? Is that covered?
If this a bio engineered virus? Is that an act of war. Not covered. (For the record, I think this is a gross bat food virus.)

Academic questions. And ones not likely to be answered in the US.

But I’m sure that there are people in Hartford CT Headquarter Offices quietly asking those questions.

And I bet LLoyds is looking at their shipping insurance policies as well.

Has anyone (or can someone here) graph out the 2017-2018 flu season (esp. the 1st few months) vs. this coronavirus?

I’m assuming the flu starts off the season with a lot more cases, so, comparisons of rates of increase, as opposed to absolute numbers, might be useful.

It’s important to keep in mind that comparisons of absolute numbers for an entire flu season and an outbreak just in it’s infancy are not valid. What matters is where 2019-nCoV will be in a month, two months, 6 months, etc.

(That’s not at all to dismiss the 200+ who have died from 2019-nCoV so far, but flu deaths from this season are already surely much greater. The question, and perspective, is the future.)

It only makes sense.

I was thinking about it this morning in terms of fighting a war: Battles are won with tactics, Wars are won with logistics.

Getting the cities closed off and stopping the spread is the tactic. But the logistical effort of identifying to infected and dealing with them is what is being lost.

The rest of the world has the “warning” time to develop their plan to handle this logistically. You can bet we will centralize the infected and have to appropriate testing and treatment facilities prepared.

I guess all those table top exercises are paying off.

Here is the problem with twitter reporting:

Do they mean the confirmation of something that is suspected or do they mean the suspected case is now confirmed.

Not saying this to you JJ...but in general.

From the article, just to clarify:

JOHANNESBURG - Botswana's government has confirmed the country's first suspected case of coronavirus. In a statement released on Friday afternoon, the health and wellness department said that the suspected case was registered at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport today upon arrival from China on an Ethiopian Airways flight.

Prep idea: I’m getting 90-day prescriptions for maintenance medicines and filling them now. Don’t want to be anywhere near a pharmacy (for flu or coronavirus)
