Coronavirus declared global health emergency by WHO

The new coronavirus has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization, as the outbreak continues to spread outside China.

"The main reason for this declaration is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries," said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The concern is that it could spread to countries with weaker health systems.

The death toll now stands at 170 people in China.

The WHO said there had been 98 cases in 18 counties outside of China, but no deaths.

Most cases have emerged in people who have travelled from the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the outbreak began.

However, there have been eight cases of human-to-human infection - in Germany, Japan, Vietnam and the United States.

Dr Tedros, speaking at the press conference in Geneva, described the virus as an "unprecedented outbreak" that has been met with an "unprecedented response".

He praised China's "extraordinary measures", taken to prevent it from spreading.

SOME HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE:

WHO has previously declared five global public health emergencies:

* Swine flu, 2009 - The H1N1 virus spread across the world in 2009, killing more than 200,000 people, and a public health emergency was called to ensure the international community was monitoring its spread more carefully.

* Polio, 2014 - Although closer than ever to eradication in 2012, polio numbers rose in 2013. An emergency was declared due to fears the global fight against its eradication could face a major setback.

* Zika, 2016 - The WHO declared Zika a public health emergency in 2016 after the disease spread rapidly through the Americas. Although for many Zika symptoms are mild, it can be dangerous for pregnant women and the emergency was called to spur urgent research.

* Ebola, 2014 and 2019 - The deadly disease has twice been declared a public health emergency. The first one lasted from August 2014 to March 2016 as almost 30,000 people were infected and more than 11,000 died in West Africa.

Let’s see how many die in the next few weeks.

Why doesn’t WHO declare malaria a global emergency. I’ll bet more people will die from malaria this year than from the Wuhan Zombie Apocalypse.

Infectious Disease - Wuhan Update - From WHO

dp0622 :"The WHO said there had been 98 cases in 18 counties outside of China,
but no deaths."

Recently confirmed, a woman in Chicago transmitted the infection to her husband.
So now it is confirmed that human-to-human transmission in the U.S. happens.
While the massive numbers of infected remain in China, the disease is spreading, worldwide.
Post #2 includes prior history of WHO declared medical emergencies
to put the issue into perspective.

GENEVA (AP) — The World Health Organization declared the outbreak sparked by a new virus in China that has been exported to more than a dozen countries as a global emergency Thursday after the number of cases spiked more than tenfold in a week.

The U.N. health agency defines an international emergency as an “extraordinary event” that constitutes a risk to other countries and requires a coordinated international response.

China first informed WHO about cases of the new virus in late December. To date, China has reported more than 7,800 cases including 170 deaths. Eighteen other countries have since reported cases, as scientists race to understand how exactly the virus is spreading and how severe it is.

Experts say there is significant evidence the virus is spreading among people in China and have noted with concern instances in other countries — including the United States, France, Japan, Germany, Canada and Vietnam — where there have also been isolated cases of human-to-human transmission.

“I’ll hold off til the FR Epidemiological Squad weighs in...”

It’s my understanding the Squad volunteered to be airlifted to that Italian cruise ship in the Mediterranean that had a case of corona onboard.

They’re gonna be sorely disappointed when they find out it’s not as case of beer...

BEIJING/GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday it was declaring the China coronavirus outbreak that has killed 170 people in China a global emergency, as cases spread to 18 countries.

The United States reported its first case of person-to-person transmission, the fifth country outside China to do so. Experts say cases of person-to-person transmission outside China are especially concerning because they suggest greater potential for the virus to spread further.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, told a news conference in Geneva that recent weeks have witnessed an unprecedented outbreak which has been met by an unprecedented response.

“Let me be clear, this declaration is not a vote of no confidence in China,” he said. “Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems.”

Malaria is on their Grade 1 emergency list. It's under Kenya, where they talk about malaria vaccines. It's Probably not considered a global threat.

I watched the news conference and these comments on Twitter
pretty much sum it up

-Can someone check the transcript and see if China has been mentioned more than this virus? I swear there’s at least 4 times they thanked China and ignored the fact that in early January, China was arresting people for mentioning the virus.

-talking out both sides of mouth. Pandemic, but no restrictions needed. Oh, and WHO chief met with Xi, and he trusts Xi (cough cough)

-It’s insane how the press conference is just a circle jerk to appease China. All I heard is WHO endlessly praising China the whole damn time

-He’s missing the entire point. The sole method of transmission of the virus is by the Airlines at 600 miles per hour. Stop international flights from China landing worldwide.
