Russia has closed its border with China in a desperate bid to prevent the spread of the deadly coronavirus that has so far killed 170 people.
The drastic measure was announced on Thursday after every corner of China was confirmed to have cases of the highly contagious disease.
Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said the drastic measure was necessary because the country 'had to do everything it could to protect its people'. He said it would come into effect immediately.
As well as shutting off the Far East border, Russia has limited all railway links with China from January 31, leaving only direct trains between Moscow and Beijing.

Ping - update
The death rate seems pretty consistent at around 2%.
That’s either due to good accurate science which has a solid prediction for the rate of death for this disease.
Or it’s due to the Chinese publishing numbers that tell the story they want to tell.
The 2% death rate doesn’t really seem too far-fetched, but the mere 8000 infected is surprising me. Do I trust any Chinese numbers?
Estimates from Hong Kong medical authorities were that 50,000 have been infected; and that was from a couple of days ago.
China would not be taking such extreme measures for only a flu affecting 4000 people, in a nation of a billion.
One thing we don’t know is how many mild cases of this there are, which need no or minimal medical intervention. BON News is one of the websites which carries the statistics, with most of the updates occurring in the late evening, US Time (around 8 to 9 PM EST).
In addition to the Infected/deaths/recovered stats, broken down by location, they have an additional tab on condition “serious/critical”. I think it will be a good idea to keep an eye on the growth/flattening of the serious/critical column.
What percentage of infected move into serious/critical? This is important, because it keeps track of serious infection—I think the overall infection numbers are probably low, but if you’re serious/critical, you’ve got a bad enough case that almost all of those people will seek medical attention. So, I’d look at that number, too.
A hyperbolic number?
How evil they are - why wont they take in the refugees?!
I heard that this virus can frequently mutate. It's possible that it could mutate to a less virulent type.
Exactly true !
It takes a lot of money to quarantine whole cities by the military.
Also, a quarantine encourages social unrest, thus encouraging confrontation with the military,
and upsetting any adjoining or neighboring country.
A quarantine also has economic consequences, which China can ill afford
when their economy is already experiencing decline.
All of these conditions will continue to unsettle China, even after the coronavirus passes.

Wouldn't that be nice?
Wasn't that the theme in some Hollywood epidemic movies?
“I could have sworn I read a post on FR last week where someone declared 90,000 died in one city.”
A Chinese nurse said 90,000 was infected.
“Do I trust any Chinese numbers?”
Why would you trust any Chi-Com numbers? Russia clearly doesn’t.
Sealing the border is a major step.
Frankly the stated numbers are underwhelming. Yet apparently China is taking drastic action. Something ain’t right. The worst part of it is the media hype of everything to make things look worse than they are. Plus no govts are trustworthy and can’t be believed. Probably best to prep. But it could turn out to be a fizzle as no info we are given is reliable.
Thanks for the clarification. I got the number right but not the substance.
How can the Rooskies seal a border if the US can’t?
Because the Ruskies will actually pull the trigger. It makes a big difference.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Even if (and that's a BIG if) China wanted to honestly report the true numbers, they couldn't.
Once the hospitals are full, once they have no choice but to turn people away at the door, those turned away cannot be counted as nCoV patients. They were never seen by a medical professional, they therefore have no formal diagnosis, and they aren't anybody's patient.
