Senate Republicans emerged from a closed-door caucus meeting on Tuesday voicing renewed confidence that they will bypass a nasty witness fight in the impeachment trial.
The consensus is that weve heard enough and its time to go to a final judgement, Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) told reporters.
Asked if the trial proceedings should go past Friday, Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), another member of Senate GOP leadership, said it shouldnt.
Were kind of confident, Thune added.
The chamber is expected to vote Friday on whether to allow new witnesses or documents in President Trump's trial. If they skip witnesses, that will pave the way for a swift vote to acquit Trump.
Democrats will need four Republican votes in order to call for additional witnesses. Both sides would then make motions for specific individuals, and the Senate would vote on whether to call them.
Senate Republicans had voiced confidence last week that they would be able to finish the trial with no witnesses, a strategy Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has advocated both publicly and privately.

So which is it?
I’d bet 90% of the Dems don’t want witnesses. They know the outcome and what a waste of time witnesses would be.
A different story than on the previous threads about this. Hopefully there will be less pearl-clutching on this one.
maybe there were just horsetrading..or maybe someone read Romney the riot act over his own connections.
“Id bet 90% of the Dems dont want witnesses. They know the outcome and what a waste of time witnesses would be.”
guaranteed ... but everyone of the Dems will vote for witnesses while praying that the GOP has 51 votes, and they’ll attack the Republicans for voting against witnesses ...

BINGO!!
No deal! If there are enough RINOs to vote for witnesses, then there are enough RINOs to block all of Trump's witnesses while approving the Dems'. Unacceptable!
Should be one vote on one negotiated list of witnesses.
I hope someone showed Romney an engraved invitation for his staff person to testify on Burisma.
This thing is over.
Nancy can go to sleep now.
Welcome to the whipsaw express.
McConnell says one thing. Caucus participants say another.
Sounds like to much to hope for. Lets hope they’re right.

Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case. Sounds very Swampish.
If that IS the case than the Turtle’s “we don’t have the votes” is a ruse to get some dems to switch.
I agree.....They just want to say....It wasnn’t a real trial without witnesses....blah, blah, blah
Well, McConnell cant come out now and say they are aligned for no witnesses. I think, in the end, they will align against witnesses, with Collins (and maybe Romney) the sole GOP votes against the caucus.
disagree....Designated Dems will vote against witnesses if push comes to shove.
They also don't want witnesses so when Trump is cleared they can claim it was a cover-up.
I sure Romney got an ear full.
Only about 10 years too late.

It doesn’t matter what happens. It doesn’t matter who testifies or what proof is brought forward.
When it is over the democrats/media will complain about every bit of it and make up whatever they want anyway.

huh?
