Sen. Mitt Romney said Saturday that it's "very likely" that he'll be in favor of calling witnesses in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, but won't decide until after opening arguments.
"I think it's very likely I'll be in favor of witnesses, but I haven't made a decision finally yet and I won't until the testimony is completed," the Utah Republican said, following the first day of the Trump team's opening arguments.
Asked if he thought the defense team was effective, Romney replied, "I just don't have any comments on the process or the evidence until the trial is over."
Romney, a conservative who has before expressed frustration with Trump, previously indicated that he would be interested in hearing testimony from former national security adviser John Bolton. He said earlier this month, "I would like to hear from John Bolton and other witnesses, but at the same time I'm comfortable with the Clinton impeachment model when we have opening arguments first and then we have a vote on whether to have witnesses."
Democrats need four Republicans to vote with them in favor of subpoenas for witnesses or new evidence in order to extend the trial and gather new information.
There are only maybe four, realistically, who would vote in favor of calling witnesses who could testify against the President. That short list includes Romney, relative moderates Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and endangered senators up for reelection like Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado.

Maybe I’ve been practicing law too long. I’m pretty cynical about witness giving self-serving testimony under oath.
If the democrats are in favor of witnesses, then I’m against it. They do NOTHING without an ulterior motive. NOTHING.
I think you’re well-meaning but I sense you don’t really understand what kind of character Mitt Romney is.
He really is two-faced and unprincipled. It’s not a slur, it’s factual.

Well who knows? The point is the rats would trade hunter to get their witnesses in a NY minute. If the rats get their witnesses the sh*t circus drags on for months And we get a parade of people shoving knives into the President and retreating to their MSM safe spaces. At the moment it looks unlikely there will be more witnesses. I hope it stays that way.

No one who knows me thinks I am “well-meaning.” My comments were sarcastic, bitterly so. Mittens is a two-faced scoundrel of the worst order. I have no use for McCain, but the guy did fly planes off of a carrier and did get shot down and did endure some pretty brutal treatment. Mittens spent his life as a vulture capitalist with no redeeming qualities in my book.
