January 25The Greatest Mystery
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
Colossians 1:15 Before I came to faith in Jesus, Id heard the gospel preached but wrestled with His identity. How could He offer forgiveness for my sins when the Bible says only God can forgive sins? I discovered I wasnt alone in my struggles after reading J. I. Packers
Knowing God. Packer suggests that for many unbelievers the really staggering Christian claim is that Jesus of Nazareth was God made man . . . as truly and fully divine as He was human. Yet this is the truth that makes salvation possible.
When the apostle Paul refers to Christ as the image of the invisible God, hes saying Jesus is completely and perfectly GodCreator and Sustainer of all things in heaven and earth‒but also fully human (Colossians 1:1517). Because of this truth, we can be confident that through Christs death and resurrection, Hes not only carried the consequences for our sins but has also redeemed human nature, so that weand all of creationcan be reconciled to God (vv. 2022).
In an amazing, initiating act of love, God the Father reveals Himself in and through Scripture by the power of God the Holy Spirit and through the life of God the Son. Those who believe in Jesus are saved because He is EmmanuelGod with us. Hallelujah!

Reflect & Pray
When have you wrestled with your understanding of Jesus? What was the result?
Loving God, thank You for revealing Yourself and reconciling us through Jesus.

My favorite by tonight's featured group. Notice that some of the girl's names mentioned--
Lucille,
Gloria and
Maybelline--are featured in popular songs of the time.

Hello Kathy!
I was at Live Aid 1985 in Philadelphia...a few years ago I became reacquainted with The Four Tops' set that day. In a word....WOW! Here is their short but powerful set. God bless The Four Tops.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
RICHARD RODGERS
CAROUSEL
Following the success of Oklahoma, Richard and Oscar sought to duplicate their success knowing they had a tough hill to climb. Richard had already adapted one Hungarian play with Larry Hart, but now they attempted to adapt Lilliom by Ferenc Molnar. The problem with that 1909 play is that the protagonist dies in the second act. After acquiring the rights, the team created lengthy sequences of music that made the ending more hopeful. The 1945 musical was a massive success, and Richard thought it contained his best work.
CAROUSEL WALTZ
Although it doesnt properly belong to the songbook, this overture to the musical is an astonishing piece, showing just how skillful Richard was as a writer of melody. Johann Strauss, both elder and younger, could not have topped this.

RICHARD RODGERS
CAROUSEL: IF I LOVED YOU
This is a kinescope from a 1954 TV broadcast where the two original stars recreate their Broadway roles from nine years earlier. Jan would go on to become the mother in TVs Lassie. John would go on to create Bonnie Raitt, who would eclipse her fathers fame.
