After being confronted by a man questioning her student loan forgiveness plan, Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren dismissed his argument. "We don't build an America by saddling our kids with debt," she said on "CBS This Morning" Friday.
In the exchange, which was caught on video and posted to Twitter Tuesday, the father tells Warren that he saved all his money for his daughter's college education. "Am I going to get my money back?" he asked her, to which she said "of course not."
"So you're going to pay for people who didn't save any money and those of us who did the right thing get screwed?" he said.
Asked how she responds to him and others with the same opinion, Warren said, "Look, we build a future going forward by making it better. By that same logic what would we have done? Not started Social Security because we didn't start it last week for you or last month for you."
When asked if she was "saying tough luck" to those people, she said "No," but went into a story about how she was given a shot to go to college even though her family "had no money."
"There was $50 a semester option for me. I was able to go to college and become a public school teacher because America had invested in a $50 a semester option for me," she said. "Today that's not available."
Warren said to save the next generation from trillions of dollars of debt, the country has to invest again.
"We don't build an America by saddling our kids with debt. We build an America by saying we're going to open up those opportunities for kids to be able to get an education without getting crushed by student loan debt," she said.

Look for her to start pitching the macroeconomic argument.
“Freeing them from this debt will allow them to get married, buy homes, cars, other items, stimulating economic growth that will benefit us all. Blah blah blah blah blah ”
Sorry, but were not saddling anyone with student loan debt. Theyre doing that to themselves.
If we just forgave everyone’s debt for everything, then wouldn’t life just be hunky dory???
I need a unicorn/rainbow gif here.
She is part of Big Academia saddling our kids with debt.
I could argue for free tuition at trade schools - plumbers, mechanics, welders etc. but never to forgive debt for gender studies degree
I’ve heard that the costs of college have risen far more than the rate of inflation in recent decades.
And that a key reason for this is because of the availability of student loans.
It might sound paradoxical, but, the easier availability of student loans compared to past decades, is a key reason why the costs of college have risen so dramatically.
Stupid squaw.
This Hag appeals to a significant percentage here in Massachusetts.
It is incredible.
Sounds to me like Warren has come out..
AGAINST REPARATIONS
Yes, the same reasoning could be applied to car loans, credit card debt, and mortgage debt. Americans owe trillions of dollars in these other types of debts. Should the government really ensct programs to get rid of all of these debts as well, allegedly so that people aren’t burdened any longer?
Warren’s trademark is that she does not think through her “big ticket items”. She did not do it around consumer finance and she certainly has not done it with regards to student loans. The father’s point on the essential fairness of her proposal is an obvious one, yet she has no response except an historically inaccurate allusion to social security. She is a lightweight pretending to be a heavyweight.
What you’re saying is true. You can also apply what you said to soaring medical prices using the same principle.
Its not at all paradoxical. The deepest pockets always get picked first.
It’s funny how this student loan forgiveness escalated. It started as a program. Then it was a problem. Now a crisis. Finals step - catastrophe.
How about don’t take out loans you can’t repay?
You are wasting your time arguing logic with a Democrat. Problem is you are wasting your time arguing with about forty percent of the population. Its really sad that the fate of America depends not on the rational but the mood of the muddled middle.
Big Ed charges the kids for 500k profs and then uses Temp Adjunct Lecturers to teach them. Big rip off.
Did she get the $50.00 option per semester because she was “Native American”?
As you hear from these stories, free education is a liberation. This is what our founders had in mind--ever expanding opportunity for people. You want to be a photographer or a writer or a musician, whatever -- an artist, you want to be self-employed, if you want to start a business, you want to change jobs, you no longer are prohibited from doing that because you have to pay back your student loan, especially because you do not want to put your family at risk by paying back your loan Warren said
It could have been worse. If that father had confronted Hillary Clinton like that, hed be dead by now.
