A man in Washington state has been diagnosed with the mysterious virus, the first case confirmed in the United States of an illness that began in China last month and has killed at least six people and sickened hundreds more, according to people familiar with the investigation. The man is in stable condition. He arrived in the United States last week, before federal health officials began screening travelers from the central Chinese city of Wuhan at Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York’s John F. Kennedy international airports. The CDC is expected to announce details about the U.S. case in a 2 p.m. news conference. Neither his identity, nor his travel route have been publicly released.

6 deaths out of 291 patients is just over 2% fatality rate.
Serious stuff.

Indeed, but currently on a lower death rate than SARS was (death rate of 14-15%). I’m sure our folks responsible for public health realize the urgency here.

There’s an update upthread - victim is described as a Washington resident who was visiting China. No word on whether foreign national residing in the US or citizen.

According to the genealogy, it pruned a bit of my family tree. Certainly nothing to sneeze at.

I went through the SARS “epidemic” in 2003 in Asia.

The worst thing was the intense government and social reaction/over-reaction.

I saw that. And when that and other reports didn’t include citizenship info, I got really curious. I’m also wondering, if he’s a foreign national, if the guy flew here when he realized he was sick, thinking he’d get better care. If he flew while he was infectious...

From a cynical political perspective, a little “ social reaction/over-reaction“ would be good thing right now - distract from the circus in the Senate; kind of a, “ never let a crisis go to waste” moment.

The screenings include a very limited number of departure cities in China and a very limited number of destination cities in the U.S. It is WAY too limited and should be expanded rapidly.

A healthy, 36 year old mom of five young kids died a month ago from Influenza B in our town of Hayden, Idaho. Three young children died in Idaho from the flu in December.

It's astonishing how quickly influenza can take a life.

If the patient is a foreign national, wonder who’s paying for his care.

Y' know, if "catching" this unfortunate guy & his illness hopefully early gives us a leg up on learning about this disease, I for one have no complaint about my tax dollars going to his care. Can't be penny wise and pound foolish with this sort of stuff...

And if the CDC is doing contact tracing.

SURELY they are. The fatality rate is not horrific, but it's more than bad enough, and this appears to be highly contagious.

Sure, and Trump brought up banning ebola visa holders. Sounds like sound advice today.

How many thousands of travelers were exposed.
Shame.

No doubt. I’ve head Influenza B strains haven’t been around for quiet a few years, and young kids, even if inoculated in the last few years, don’t have this resistance to this strain. That’s why kids especially, need a flu shot this year.

The man is a resident of Snohomish County, Wash., who experienced symptoms after returning from a trip to the region around Wuhan, China, where the outbreak began. He was hospitalized with pneumonia last week, and infection with the coronavirus was confirmed on Monday afternoon.

Who else did he expose? Wonder how long the incubation period is.

I am guessing.. but i bet 90% of the Chinese coming to America ..land in Canada first.. rent a tour bus, or rent a car, and head south..in this case, Wash. State.
