A Japanese woman was asked to take a pregnancy test before flying to a US island that has become popular for birth tourism

In November, 25-year-old Japanese citizen Midori Nishida was checking into a flight to Saipan, a US island in the Pacific, where she was going to visit her parents. She wasn't pregnant, and said so on a check-in questionnaire, but airline staff made her take a pregnancy test anyways before she was allowed to board.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Nishida was asked to give permission to an authorized medical provider to conduct a "fit-to-fly" assessment, and the form said it was for women who had a body size or shape resembling a pregnant woman.

Nishida told the Wall Street Journal it was "very humiliating and frustrating" to be escorted to a public restroom where she was handed a strip to urinate on. She did not test positive and was able to board the flight.

Hong Kong Express Airways said the test was in response to "concerns raised by authorities in Saipan," where birth tourism resulted in more tourists giving birth there than residents in 2018.

I have no problem with this whatsoever. Until SCOTUS clarifies they 14th this should be standard procedure.

This filthy scam/problem is getting worse. Its not really the Japanese who are mainly doing this, but rather Chinese, Vietnamese and now, Indians.

The pay “agents” as much as $80K to provide homes/apartments before and after birthing and to arrange the child’s passport

If there are any complications, they take the mother and child to the local public hospital, where YOU pay for it.

Repeal the 14th. It’s a left over from the CW.

Also it’s not in the Constitution and was never authorized by Congress.

Unnecessary. The 14th does not require giving citizenship to children born of people here illegally, nor temporary/tourist types.

Tell that to the Supreme Court and Congress. They don’t seem to understand laws.

I have no problem with it, but it’s amazing that’s where the attention is. Japanese women, flying to Guam to give birth. Meanwhile 2500 Mexicans add a flood across the border and nobody but Trump can barely lift a finger.

The SCOTUS has held this only applies to “green card” kids.

It’s actually just a regulation. Trump could change this.

Russians too. It's become a cottage industry for pregnant russian women to fly to Miami to give birth.
