The controversy erupted during Friday evening’s episode, which included the category “Where’s that Church?”

A $200 clue stated: “Built in the 300s A.D., the Church of the Nativity.”

Contestant Katie Needle quickly buzzed in, answering “What is Palestine?”

Host Alex Trebek responded, “no.”

Competitor Jack McGuire then buzzed in, answering: “What is Israel?”

His answer was deemed correct.

The Basilica of the Nativity is in Bethlehem. which is P.A. territory. You have to go through a checkpoint at a wall to get to it from Jerusalem.

I saw the episode. And when the first contestant answered “Palestine,” I half-expected the judges to accept that answer.

Was it Palestine when it was built?

Was it Palestine when it was built?

It was JUDEA, a province of Israel when Jesus was born there. Even the Romans called it Judea (from Judah, son of Jacob, and source of the name "Jews" ).

Just because Muslim armies occupied it 1800 years later doesn't make it any less Israel or Jewish land. Muslim armies also invaded and conquered Spain, occupying it for 770 years before it was also liberated. Neither land has any importance in Islam.

Hmm...It’s not Israel proper...
Would you say that Puerto Rico/American Samoa were in the United States? Is Bermuda in the UK?

A blatantly one-sided CNN hit-piece.

Once land is conquered by Islam, muslims will tell you that it is muslim territory for eternity.

My answer was Palestine as well, and I was surprised that they didn't accept it. I concluded that perhaps there was some slant to things of which I wasn't aware.

I would, and I served with many fine Marines from there.
You seem to disagree.

Where is the national capital of American Samoa?

That was a bad question and not fair to the contestants.

There is a Palestinian National Authority, but there is no Palestine. The area in which the Church of the Nativity is located is part of the State of Israel. The Jeopardy! judge was correct.

*** I saw that and cheered! ***

After the break, even though the dispute was not shown on the broadcast, her
Money total showed $200 dollars more- from $3600 to $3800, IIRC.

At the time it was reconstructed (6th Century), the Byzantines who ruled the place called it “Palestina Secunda”.

I have noticed in the last few months or maybe longer, Jeopardy has had quite a few answers which were stated as fact and are popularly believed but are probably not correct.

They should never use those type answers. Usually they preface it with something like “according to” which is OK.

Oh wow...I didn’t notice that.

They were very strict in that particular category. One contestant named the CITY where the Sagrada Familia was located (Barcelona) and lost to the other who said “SPAIN”.

Although no explanation was provided on-air by Alex or the judges, it appears as though the judges elected to refund Katie’s response, originally ruled incorrect, on the 30th clue of the Jeopardy! round (WHERE’S THAT CHURCH $200), likely as a way out of the geopolitical maelstrom the show painted itself into.

Indeed. It was a very politically incorrect blunder.

But the PA is technically part of Israel, whether they like it or not.
