The Ontario government erroneously sent out a mass alert telling of an incident at Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, the local fire chief says, sending people across the region into a panic as they sent a retraction notice approximately 106 minutes later.
At about 7:25 a.m. Sunday, the province said an incident was reported at the station, located off of Montgomery Park Road in Pickering,
There has been NO abnormal release of radioactivity from the station, the alert read. People near the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station DO NOT need to take any protective actions at this time.

I’m sure many will believe the following statement was a cover up.
Many will be wearing their radiation suits today :)
I used to manage these kinds of alerts. They are easy to set up and they have to have hard stops in the triggering process. This sounds like an operator hit the wrong trigger. The Text of the message is pre-set.
I had someone trigger a mass casualty event to 3,000 people at 1 AM. It should have been a local emergency response sent to about 20 people.
Stuff happens.
It took almost two hours to retract it? Pathetic.
Thanks for posting. Health/life BUMP!

It is believed the emergency alert system was being tested this morning and an actual warning was sent out by mistake.
So can we take it that the test of the emergency notification system was a failure?
These “mishaps” are getting to be irksome - an alert in South Korea that was a “mistake” some months back, an airliner in the wrong place/wrong time shot down in Iran.
And now nuclear alert in Canada that was in error.
Who’s going to believe when the next time is the real thing?
And in DC, a mistake of sending a letter that troops are to be pulled out of Iraq.
Like I said on another site:
Good thing it wasn’t a province-wide Amber Alert at 03:00, and which repeats at 03:30, 04:00, 04:30, and as many times as is deemed ‘necessary’. The penalty for criticising or even questioning the effectiveness of those is to be shamed, ostracised and denounced as a heartless, soulless monster.
/Won’t someone think of the children?!?
Several months ago, the brain trust at Emergency Alberta sent out an ‘amber alert’ over all of the Province concerning something that occurred in very northern Alberta. I live in Calgary and drive locally for a living. As I drive to a schedule, I often do not get a break for 4-6 hours, so I cannot check my phone for such alerts. As it turned out, this alert repeated every 10 minutes until it was acknowledged. Not enjoyable having my phone vibrate every 10 minutes for 2 hours.
Someone over on FARK.com just photo-shopped Baghdad Bob onto a screenshot of the alert in question.
Absolutely perfect! :P
Maybe they were checking to see if was real.
I’m more conspiracy minded than most others on this thread.
I think this was a ‘step 1’ in getting the nuclear plant shut down by sending a momentary panic into everyone.
Or Gilda Radner as Emily Litella saying “Never mind!”
I love nuclear power. Big fan.
Canada better reimburse.
easier to take back than an errant SAM accidentally unleashed on an unsuspecting civilian airliner filled to the brim with innocents ...
“I just bought 10 pounds of hot dogs and marshmallows for the radioactive barbecue”
planning on sticking the coat-hangers out of the ports of your lead-lined dwelling, right? btw, you probably should have also bought the rest of the ingredients for S’mores for radioactive desert ...
I got both but I was in the shower. :)
