Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is backing a resolution to change the Senates rules to allow for lawmakers to dismiss articles of impeachment against President Trump before the House sends them over.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) announced on Thursday that McConnell has signed on as a co-sponsor to the resolution, which he introduced earlier this week.
Spokesmen for McConnell didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about his support.
Changing the rules would either require a two-thirds vote or for Republicans to deploy the "nuclear" option.
The resolution would give the House 25 days to send articles of impeachment over to the Senate. After that, a senator could offer a motion to dismiss "with prejudice for failure by the House of Representatives to prosecute such articles" with a simple majority vote, according to Hawley's proposal.
McConnell has repeatedly lashed out at Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for delaying sending over the two articles of impeachment.
"This is what they have done: They have initiated one of the most grave and most unsettling processes in our Constitution and then refused to allow a resolution," he said on Thursday.

Yep, and it looks like Mitch has decided to go nuclear here and Im very OK with that.
She actually only has a few more days. This starts from when they were “passed,” which was back in December.
Somebody must be slipping one of those testosterone boosters into Turtle’s coffee.
Senate requires 2/3 vote to convict. Anything less than that is an acquittal.
They only require 51 votes to change the rules.
As Rush noted, Nancy will let this happen so she can cry “coverup”, because she can’t stand the Senate acquittal.
doesn’t he need 67 votes to change the rules?
No I didn’t. Read it again.
My post was based on what I heard on Laura Ingraham last night, not anything from you.
It’s not unusual to get similar responses when an article is first posted.
Give her till November of 2020.
President Trump cannot pay for better campaign ads than this
I think Pelosi would go along with this. /s
Democrats, a reminder, be careful for what you wish for, you may get it.
Nancy’s plan was a pathetic disaster, she’ll send them over next week.
Pelosi made a tactical error in not sending the Articles to the Senate. If she had, then the ball would have been in the Senate’s court and she could be on the side line complaining.
Instead she is staggering around trying to figure out what to do has resulted in loss of any momentum the whole process may have had.
Mean while President’s economy is still going strong. More Judges are being appointed. Environmental regulations are being re-written. And, President Trump prevented WWIII.
It is (way) too early to tell but the death of the individual that has been creating so much death and destruction in the Middle East may be a game changer.
For years Iran has acted like they wanted to go head to head with the US and they were given their chance. Instead of releasing the hounds from hell on the US they sent a few puppies to pee on the carpet? Why? What is the difference from year gone by.
Could it be we have a man in the White House that does not bluff, but made it clear exactly what would happen if Americans were killed? Yeah, that may be it.
By the way, what happen to that nice gift from North Korea?
Can any normal person imagine being related to these democrat dipshits pulling a stunt like this? These jerks are incapable of rational thought if they thing someone can be removed from office when there is no crime.
I might be okay with this if the clock on the 25 days is started as of the first day the “articles” passed the House.
Nancy pelosi... vexatious litigant
For the history books
Shut it down Mitch!
Watch Pelosi sent the articles over while the senate votes to dismiss.
