Iraqi officials on Monday backed away from their threat to expel U.S. troops following the killing of Iranian terrorist mastermind Gen. Qasem Soleimani and some important Iraqi Shiite militia leaders.
The tone in Baghdad appears to have changed after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened sanctions against Iraq and a draft letter announcing complete U.S. withdrawal of forces accidentally leaked.
The U.S. presidents threats to impose sanctions on Iraq that will make Iranian sanctions seem somewhat tame led some Iraqi MPs to urge a softening of the parliaments position. One Iraqi MP said Trumps unpredictability made such a move risky when US air support in particular might still be needed to prevent a resurgence of Islamic State, the UK Guardian reported.
This led to (theoretically former, but still acting) Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi walking back his demand for urgent measures to expel American forces. On Monday, his office released a statement stressing the importance of mutual cooperation on implementing the withdrawal of foreign troops, in line with the Iraqi parliaments resolution, and to set relations with the United States on a proper foundation.
Abdul-Mahdis statement also emphasized how dangerous the situation is right now and its potential consequences and declared Iraq will do all it can to prevent the descent into open war.

I think there’s something about losing a war and being occupied that they missed in Jihad 101.
Yeah, accidentally, riiiight................
Yep.
If we did pull out, ISIS and IRAN would carve them up like Thanksgiving turkey.................
Agreed. I think it has been the Iranian goal to get us out of there all these years. As soon as we put down Saddam’s troops, that was the goal for Iran.
Surprise, surprise.......
They were puffed up and beating their chests when they didn’t think he would take them seriously.
Then, mysteriously, a letter gets *unintentionally* “leaked* that indicates that we just might be taking them at face value and they have time to think about what the consequences of that might mean.
3D chess is awesome.
Yep, I’m surprised the Dems haven’t photoshopped a picture of Trump with that tunic on. They just haven’t thought of it yet, but give them time. Anything the Dems can do to stir up trouble, no matter the consequences that our troops have to bear, is simply “political differences”, right? </sarc>
[If we did pull out, ISIS and IRAN would carve them up like Thanksgiving turkey.................]
Or a bacon-wrapped ham.
Hey, that sounds pretty good...
Agreed. Theyre not dealing with a pro-Islamic wuss anymore, but with somebody who puts America first.
Leverage + a CIC who knows how to use it =. ??????
“One Iraqi MP said Trumps unpredictability made such a move risky...”
This is one of the Presidents greatest strengths.
That’s right, Trump is cra-crazy! You don’t want to get on the wrong side of him. This is what winning looks like.
“”””””Agreed. Theyre not dealing with a pro-Islamic wuss anymore, but with somebody who puts America first.””””””””””
I think you meant to say..... Theyre not dealing with a FELLOW MUSLIM wuss anymore, but with somebody who puts America first.
I read somewhere that the majority of their legislature is Shiite, and that actually the majority of Iraq (or at least the voting parts of it) is now Shiite. The Shiites are completely controlled by Iran, and in fact the non-Shiites either voted present, didnt vote, or didnt even show up because they were afraid.
Im not sure how theyd be able to change the legislature much, but this move by Trump (well, this accidental leak....hah hah) may have given back a little power to the non-Shiites and may have made the Shiites think a bit about how theyd be able to control the rest of the population if the US left. Not that were running security for them, but we are maintaining some stability.
Trying hard to care.
.....
Nope.
Sorry.
Not working.
