The French general overseeing the reconstruction of fire-devastated Notre Dame Cathedral says the Paris landmark is not saved yet because theres still a risk its vaulted ceilings might collapse.
Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin told French broadcaster CNews on Sunday that the cathedral is still in a state of peril after last years fire, which destroyed its roof and toppled its 300-foot, 750-ton spire as the cathedral was undergoing renovations.
Notre Dame is not saved because ... there is an extremely important step ahead, which is to remove the scaffolding that had been built around the spire before the fire, he said.
The rector of Notre Dame, Monsignor Patrick Chauvet, told the AP last month that the cathedral is still so fragile theres a 50% chance the structure might not be saved, because the scaffolding may fall onto the vaulted ceilings.
A former chief of staff of Frances armed forces, Georgelin was named by French President Emmanuel Macron to lead the reconstruction effort for Notre Dame.
He said the actual condition of the cathedrals vaults is not fully known, which means he could not guarantee that it wont fall apart.

I don't trust the people working on this restoration. They sound like they believe the structure cannot be saved, have given up hope it can be, and are looking for reason to let it collapse.
The French general overseeing the reconstruction
I fear Norte Dame is doomed.
Oops, looks like those scaffolding weren’t in good shape for the repairs. Sorry for the broken Church, now we shouldn’t let it be a total loss... how about a new Mosque?
Any word as to when the next accidental electrical fire will be?
Funny how the videos of the bearded guy with the turban on his head near the fire disappeared.
Also funny how the French knew it was an electrical fire before the fire was even out.
President Macron, we know who really set that fire.
Prayers for the rebuilding of this cathedral.
Did they ever publicly release the results of the investigation into the fire? I don’t recall ever hearing about that aspect of this.
I always thought stone when subject to fire and heat is ruined and breaks and cracks easily?
WORST RENOVATION EVER
TWO electrical fires, started in different areas, no?
One of the excuses they're using now is lead.
Lead was used in the original constructed and melted over everything in the fire.
They're treating this lead problem like it's the most deadly poison known to mankind.
Disposable suits and respirators are proven safe and reliable in dramatically limiting exposure but the authorities are treating it as a major threat.
Unless they get competent people who know how to get things done this restoration is planned to fail.
If they’re working with a set price to fix the structure - - and see that part as ‘extremely expensive and time consuming’ to fix - might be a toxic financial incentive that brings the structure down.
I always thought stone when subject to fire and heat is ruined and breaks and cracks easily?
Thats a really good question.
Limestone when subjected to heat in excess of 600 degrees experiences significant degradation of strength - the mortar does as well. Limestone will also experience discoloration which is not reversible.
This would mean that many of the vaults may not be structurally self sufficient in the long run. This does not mean, however, that they will inevitably fail and need to be replaced. It indicates, in my opinion, that with temporary support, proper analysis and design, the loads to compromised areas can be resolved and the structure saved. Its really just a matter of money - it aint cheap!
Just as well. The space is needed for the new mosque.
“French general overseeing the reconstruction...”
There’s the problem, right there.
Report and film were buried and will never be seen again.
Built with the technology of the Middle Ages, lasted eight hundred freaking years through wars and revolutions, and now THIS.....!!!?
Trying hard not to believe the End Times are nigh.
Have Trump do it. Will be fix d in six months, Under budget
